Also when you go away invest in a feliway plug in diffuser (put it on a few days before you go as needs a few days to start to work).
Will have a think about where to put a second one, we only have a two up two down house, and you walk through the living room into the kitchen. Don't really want one in the living room. We don't let him upstairs now as he had some fits earlier in the year (cause never found) so we worry if he has one and he's coming down the stairs.

Also, if you're worried about the sofa while you're away, you could always cover it with old linen and/or towels.
Will be doing that. The two seater that he basically uses has his blanket, throw, puppy training pads etc on. TBH its not the sofa per say I'm worred about its him.

Also it may be a mild UTI, one of my cats initially tested fine but after a couple of weeks the synmptoms returned & he did have a mild infection. Have you been able to get a urine sample to be tested?

Is there any way you can section him off from this area whilst unsupervised to see if you can break the habit?
I use Simple Solutions Extreme which is excellent no stains and no odours, well that are noticable to us. We move the cushions about as well and turn them over.

I have spoken with the vet. I am getting some of the cat litter to enable me to get a urine sample from him again and I will whizz that in for the vet to test. She thinks from what I have said that it does just sounds like and age/sleep thing but we can rule anything out to begin with.

Thanks so much for all your replies xx

Re: At the end of my tether

Jayne-when you mentioned the fits perhaps this is something else to consider as a possible cause especially when you can see no other pattern to his behaviour ie he's using the litter tray normally otherwise. I know cats can urinate during seizures etc and these could still be happening though in a milder form when you're not around.

Alternatively, he may have a mild bladder infection in which case I'd be inclined to try a course of antibiotics regardless of a negative urine test result!

The thought had crossed my mind. I'm ill myself at the moment, but hopefully will feel better tomorrow so will get his urine test to the vets tomorrow morning and will mention this to the vet.
