Re: Indoor V's Outdoor
I dont have cats of my own but my daughter has 4 all indoor cats..
Stewie Dumpling Polly and Sybil.. Dumpling is far too timid to even be trusted outdoors but the fact is we live in a town with busy roads and loosing one of them would be too high a price to pay.. Instead they get the run of the downstairs and two huge cat trees that go from floor to ceiling either side of the bay window. |

Re: Indoor V's Outdoor
We've always had a cat flap and once the cats were old enough to go outside by themselves we let them make the choice. Amber was very outdoorsy by nature (a real little huntstress) where as Buster just by his very nature was a little lazy bones and was always happiest lazing around on a cushion, lap or our bed. He used to do a quick wander round the garden but then back indoors again for yet another snooze.
We now have 2 new 12 week kittens so time will tell what they will become. |

Re: Indoor V's Outdoor
Ours are indoor-only at the moment as they are not yet 6 months old and have only recently been neutered. They will never be free-roaming as we live close to the city centre, near a main road, and I just wouldn't feel like they were safe. There are also a lot of cats in the neighbourhood (most of which poo in our garden!
) and it doesn't "feel" right to let ours out. They are also gorgeous (some visiting friends have called them the "prettiest, softest cats they have ever met" ) and I am scared of them being kittynapped!!!However, we are hoping to come up with a compromise. When they're maybe 10-12 months old, we may introduce them to the outdoors by trying harness training. Then again, at that age, it'll be the coldest part of winter so maybe they won't fancy going out. We may wait until next Spring, when they'll be just over a year old. ![]() We'd like to provide some way for them to enjoy the garden, but cat-proof fencing is probably not a possibility with our little postage stamp of a garden, and a cat run probably wouldn't be practical either. It's something I keep thinking about as a project for Spring 2012 though! ![]()

Re: Indoor V's Outdoor
Oscar grew up having outdoor access but now spends more time indoors. He still wanders out to the garden but almost never any further than that these days.
Merson loves to go outside but his access is limited. I get really stressed when I haven't seen him for more than an hour so we only let him out at certain times. The OH used to let him out on his days off, but he doesn't pay the same amount of attention so IF anything were to happen, he wouldn't know what time he'd seen the cat last. So I don't let him out at all now unless I am at home. Abby is strictly indoors and all future cats will be. She was a stray and came from a rescue so has had outdoor experience and is desperate to go out again. However, she is SO friendly & trusting, she would go up to anyone and we won't take the risk of losing her. Also, she is the OH's cat and he wants her to stay indoors, so that is that. We are currently looking at options of cat-proofing the garden but it is, unfortunately, a shared access garden and my neighbour does come through quite regularly.

Re: Indoor V's Outdoor
Puss Puss has always lived outdoors
Shadow lived outdoors until last Jan so now he goes out for a few hours a day and he seems happy with that.

Re: Indoor V's Outdoor
Daisy and Alfie both like to go outside, especially Alfie - he goes off on little adventures I'm sure! Leo is an indoor cat, through choice. The cat flap is there and he watches the other cats go out but after leaving the patio door open lots in the summer we've noticed he's terrified of going outside. We've tried lots of things, sitting out in the garden etc but he just wont have it. He's happy staying indoors and we're happy with it too. The only times I keep all of them in is bonfire night, new years etc. xx

Re: Indoor V's Outdoor
The area we live in is run by cats and Misty uses my bedroom window as her own personal door in and out of the house. I think she was an outdoor cat when we got her, but she just was just itching to get out, so once she was settled in our house, spayed and recovered we let her out and she's never looked back...literally...she goes next door then for her fuss and sleeps in their porch! Looking at me like I'm nothing!
