Smile Kitten Problems

Hi there everyone!!
Me and my partner have just adopted two little 5 month old boys. We have had them for 3 weeks. Last week we noticed one of them licking the others leg. At first we thought it was because he had a little bit of food on there or a knot, and that he was just grooming him. It looks like he is suckling on it and sounds that way too. The problem is he keeps going to it and if you try and get him off he just goes straight back to it. I have tried to get my finger there to see what he is doing, and it feels a little like he is nibbling, like they do when they get a knot out. The other seems at first not to be bothered but after a while he trys to get away from him. I have never seen or heard of this before. Has anyone else come across it??? Thanks Hanna xx

Re: Kitten Problems

He's just suckling on his brother from the sounds of it. My Henry and Ellie are litter mates and they sucked on Henry for a long time (and the dog too!)---Henry would fold himself in half to suck on his own stomach and Ellie would nurse on her brother as if he was mum. It was almost comical. And Chaucer, who was taken from mum before he was properly weaned, still tries to nurse on me every day--he likes my chin in particular.

I would say as long as the suckle-ee doesn't mind and the suckler isn't causing any damage, then they are just doing it to comfort themselves.

Re: Kitten Problems

Thats really strange, I've not come across that before. The only thing I can recommend is keeping an eye on the nibbler, and when he goes near the other one break them up and keep them apart, he'll get the point in the end and stop doing it. It might just be something he'll eventually grow out of.

Re: Kitten Problems

My two Bengal kittens are brother and sister, they were the only two in the litter so are exceptionally close. Spot (the boy) is a little bit of a wimp sometimes and relies on Lula a lot, though he is starting to get a lot more naughty now he has fully settled in.

Spot quite often suckles on Lula's tummy like he would if she were his mum, so much so that she gets absolutely soaked! It is getting less and less, however, and I am sure it is something he will grow out of. The breeder who I bought them from is also a vet. She was well aware of this behaviour and said it was nothing to worry about.
