At my wits end

We have 3 cats Jasper & Husky my partners male & female existing cats before we met who are about 6/7 and both neutered, and Logan our 5mth old kitten who we got after I lost my old cat.

Jasper and husky had got used to another cat in the house when I moved in with my partner as I came with my little old man, now he was a very gentle subdued cat and Husky tolorated him, Jasper and Orion bcame buddies and all was well untill he passed away.

Then we got Logan a boystrous now 5mth kitten and life as never been the same again. When we got him we were told he was afew days off 8 weeks????? Im still doubting this is the case as he was far too small, and he was wobbaly on his feet, im tipping he was more 5 1/2 weeks. As hes grown up hes hes developed this abit of chasing husky and jasper. I think he just wants to play but my oppinion is he lacks the skills he needs to know the difference between playing and fighting as he was seperated from his litter mates too early. Jaspers the male is ok with this to an extent, when logan chases and pounces on his back, jasper gives him a good telling off, but lately Logan seems to just square up to him ( he also does this with my hand when were playing).

The thing thats worrying me the most though is Husky, shes got to the stage were she doesnt want to come in the house anymore becouse she knows at some stage he will; pounce on her and it terrifies her, she just runs away anyware round the house and of course logan follows. Iv tried every unishment I can think of, squirting with water, this worked for everything els, like showing him the house rule etc, but not anymore, we then tried shouting and locking in the bathroom downstairs, but now if we shout at him he just trotts off into the bathroom on his own as though to say" go on then, shut the door" When that stopped wworking i tried putting a paw under a running tap and this just diddnt faze him at all.

Im also pregnant and so worried that my little girl will just leave home once the babies hear as Logan and a new baby in the house will just be too much for my timid Girl.

All Cats have been done, Logan was neutered about 2 weeks ago.

Oh, and he loves to play fight with us, its his favourite game, im beginning to think we need to stop this to learn him that bighting is a no no, but then i dont know if biting is a no no as he play fights with jasper and thats ok.

Any help and advice would be greatly welcome

Re: At my wits end

Hi and welcome to the forum. Lovely to have you with us.

The first thing I think that would be of the best benefit, would be to get Logan a playmate of his own age. As crazy as that might sound. Two youngs kittens together will play quite happily with each other and this will allow the oldies to carry on with their usual 23hr a day sleep pattern. Logan wants to play because he is a baby with loads of energy and he is probably pestering the oldies all the time which is resulting in a form of resentment.

Try getting in touch with some local rescues and see what they have in the way of 5-6mth old kittens. You might be thinking "No, more cats = more hard work" but you will find that the kittens amuse each other and this would actually take a lot of pressure off you.

Please don't shout at Logan though as this could have adverse effects. It will also distress Husky even more, especially if she is of a timid nature. Have you tried a Feliway plug-in or two to help restore a bit of harmony to the home?

I hope these suggestions are helpful and I'm sure there will be other forum members who can offer additional advice.

Please feel free to post up piccies of your furry babies - we love piccies around here.

Re: At my wits end

We were also thinking about another kitten as well. My Partner wanted 2 in the beginning but I said no as me being selfish wanted the kitten to bond with me in the same way as my old man cat had but I guess I just wasnt thinking right at the time. Sounds selfish doesnt it, but in mye head it wasnt.

Will also stop the shouting, I never thought it would upset husky more but looking at it now youv mentioned it I can see it does.

It is difficult to replicate a special bond like that and it cannot be forced. If it's going to happen it will, no matter how many cats you have. It was not selfish, it is just a natural human emotion.

Now that you are pregnant, it would really help you for Logan to have a chum because the baby will take up a lot of your time when it arrives and Logan will be more lonely because the time you currently give to him could be reduced.

I find my cats are like kids and respond to firm 'No' s but it does take time for them to get this message. Just like a human toddler learning 'No' for the first time. A few battles & tantrums along the way but they get there in the end if you persevere.

Good luck & please keep us updated on things.

Re: At my wits end

I understand completly what you mean about the no. Given time once my pets have lernt it, they always respond to it, even the 123 comand but our Logans Different. IF got to admit that you havnt told me anything other than what we have already thought oureslves, especialy the time reduced when the baby does come along.

Weve decided to get another cat and plan on viewing one later today, Shes the same age as logan. fingers crossed

Re: At my wits end

Luna was like that too with our older cat Tom who is extremely timid. She is 6 months old next week and seems to be growing out of the playful/playfight stage. She still does occassionally but she would rather nuzzle tom and smell him than attack him now. We got her some more intensive toys that she could play with when alone because another kitten was sadly not an option for us. Hopefully this new girl will be able to come home and give him some fun time and clear the way for your older girl to be able to relax and adapt fully ready for when your fur-less baby arrives xxxx
