I'm annoyed couldn't get cat in cat carrier....

so I missed vet's appointment. Managed to get her in 10 mins later but the vet had gone to do an op so got another one for 4.50pm this afternoon.

Get this: the receptionist suggested locking her in a room all day. I said no way!! For a start she'd rip the room to shreds and also have toilet accidents (she goes though the cat flap for the toilet). So now I have to wait until she gets back later on and grab her and try to coax her back into the box. I even used some cat treats to entice her. She was fine going in the cat carrier prior to getting the kittens but its all gone belly up now and I even used feliway spray but didn't make any difference

Oh man!! How can I get her inside the box easily and smoothly? Any suggestions. She HAS to go today for her second jab.

Easily and smoothly into a cat carrier....? I didn't think there was such a thing! There is nothing on this Earth that would entice either of mine into a carrier out of their own free will. I literally just shove 'em in and slam the door - thought that's how everyone did it!

Once we're at the vets, however, they can't get back into their carrier fast enough!

Re: I'm annoyed couldn't get cat in cat carrier....

when my cat used to have to go in her carrier I used to just pick her up and plonk her in head and front feet first with the carrier facing the ceiling. . .I know the sounds cruel but it was the only way to do it without her freaking out, turning around and running

after doing that all of the time I used to leave it in the dining room with a blanket in for her to sleep in if she wanted to. . .and she got used to it and slept in it and then it was easy to get her in I know that doesn't help you now but it may help for the future

I must be very lucky ..... All I do if we have to take Molly out, is put the carrier on the living room floor with the door open, and because she is soooooooooo nosey she just strolls in there and sits down

Re: I'm annoyed couldn't get cat in cat carrier....

Just to add, based on my two: I can't show them the carrier at all (should have conditioned it to be a good thing when they were young, I know), they completely freak out and I won't see them again for the rest of the day.

Several years ago we almost missed a holiday flight because Jazz did a Houdini when he saw the cat carrier. Luckily our dog walker stepped in at the very last minute (I'm talking about on the way to the airport, frantic and teary phone calls!) and visited the cats twice a day that week.

So...these days when it's time to get them in the carrier, I wait until they're asleep, go about the house closing all doors, blocking all escape routes, quietly get the carriers out from the store cupboard, ever so calmly get the quieter cat (Jazz), pretend everything's fine, pick him up, give him a cuddle, everything's normal lalalala whistle whistle whistle....and boom! Head-first into the carrier! A slightly quicker mode of action with cat #2, as generally by now he'll have realised something's up.

It's all about extreme stealth in this house!

With my next cats, I'm going to get them used to the carrier from Day 1 - the whole stealth thing is way too stressful (for me!!).

Is your carrier a front opening one,or a top opening.I used to borrow a wire, top opening carrier from my vet when I had to take my semi feral cat to the vet.Made vets visits far less stressful all round.

I have a cage style carrier which lies open all day long in the study and the cats occasionally lie in it when the OH is on his X-Box.

Being a cage, it can be top or side opening depending on how you place it and so it is not usually a problem getting the cats in. Pick 'em up, plonk 'em in, close top down. Job done!

They also make less noise once they are in it because they can clearly see out on all sides to don't get that stressed about it. It's the best carrier I have ever had.

Re: I'm annoyed couldn't get cat in cat carrier....

I have trouble getting Spencer in the carrier but the vet showed me if you pick them up by the scruff of the neck they curl their legs up (something to do with so their feet don't drag when their mum would carry them about) and just put the carrier on it's side (or so the opening is at the top) and place them in.

I haven't actually tried it yet but it definitely worked when the vet did it!

Shamy - try leaving the carrier out somewhere as a bed so that they get used to it lying about.

The boys used to go funny when they saw the cage coming out from under the bed. However, I was using it so much back in March that it was easier to leave it out. Next thing I knew, the cats were sleeping in it!!!!
It hasn't been away since.

This might help a bit......

OMG i can remember trying to get Jordan my first cat into a carrier, he freaked out and got his claw stuck in my neck.

Rosie isnt too keen on her carrier so i will wrap her in a towel and plonk her in it and close the door. I say i will do it but my other half can.
