advice about cats and dogs living together please
we have had our dog since a pup and she is now 1 yr.
Today we have had a cat just walk into the house and make itself at home!!!!!! found the owner and they said that they dont want it as it fights with their other cat. My dog is going mad at the mo because she has seen this cat and can smell it in the house. It is wise to keep it or not????? I have tried to kick this cat out but she just comes back in when i open the door. |

Re: advice about cats and dogs living together please
i would say it all depends on how much your dog dislikes cats, and whether or not you actually want a cat.
if you do, then i would keep an eye on them, don't let them be alone without supervision for long periods of time (obviously being in a different room is ok). if your dog's the same as the last 2 i had, it'll be very keen to get it's jaws on the cat until the cat scratches it's nose. then it'll give cat a nice wide berth. all depends on how savvy the cat is as well, if the dog chases it and the cat runs, i'd be very wary, as the cat should stand it's ground if it has any chance of being furry in the house. Hopefully cat will assert it's claws soon. ![]()

Re: advice about cats and dogs living together please
I have two cat's one is 1 year old and the other is 5 years old. I have now got a 13 week old Puppy. My 5 year old cat was use to dogs as I had one before so was worried about the younger one with my puppy.
Well the youngest cat now thinks shes a dog as she runs round the room playing with the puppy (she is bigger then the puppy). Which is quite funny to see. The older cat is not to keen and as hissed a few times at the puppy but moves out of her way so she can't reach her. I never leave them on their own together as sometimes I have to stop them playing as the cat gets a bit rough. See how they get on together but don't leave them on their own. |

Re: advice about cats and dogs living together please
We have both a dog and a cat. Our mad lab Shen was a year old when we introduced him to his 'little brother' Thomas. At first Shen just wanted to play with Thomas and Thomas wanted to get away.
First of all we allowed Shen to sniff Thomas while he was in a cat box in the same room. Then we moved on to introducing Thomas and Shen by making Shen sit. We would hold the kitten in our arms and use the 'leave it!' command if Shen became to excited. Once Shen was calm around Thomas we would treat him with a tidbit. Now Shen is 4 and Thomas is 3. At night Thomas strolls in and turfs Shen out of his bed!
