Picture books about cats

I'm trying to find a children's book about a very fat cat that goes missing and it turns out he has adopted a lot of different families (I think about 7). I can remember the mum and kids went walking around the neighbourhood, calling the cat, and possibly beating a large saucepan/pot with a wooden spoon?

On the way to finding him they meet up with a lot of other people who are all looking for the same cat but all call him by a different name. As it turns out the cat is a bit of a guts and eats at a lot of houses and each family has named him. They all agree not to feed the cat so much but the cheeky cat keeps one other family a secret and so still gets fed more than he needs.

The last page is him happily eating from a (yellow?) bowl with his name on it which I think may have been 'Sunday' but not sure...

I can remember reading it to my sisters so we had a copy around 1995 in Australia but that's all I have to go on. I'm trying to collect a few of my favourite cat books for my nephew for christmas and would like to include this one. I've already got a copy of 'My Cat Likes to Hide in Boxes'

Re: Picture books about cats

It sounds a bit similar to an book for infant aged children called "Six Dinner Sid", where a black cat eats and makes himself at home at several different houses in the neighbourhood. It doesn't sound exactly the same story though. I'm not sure how old your nephew is, but if you are collecting cat books there's also "The Mousehole Cat" which has beautiful illustrations and the Mog books.

Re: Picture books about cats

Sorry, I can't help with the book you're after - but one that I've always remembered from being little (although not strictly 'pet cat' related) is 'The Tiger Who Came To Tea'

Re: Picture books about cats

Cheers all

Oooh I looked up Six Dinner Sid but it's not the one. Still looks like a fun book and I like the two street names. Marley will only be 10 months or so at christmas so I can get almost anything and he will grow into it. I've got Slinky Malinki and he already has a few others by Lynley Dodd and The Tiger Who Came to Tea is now on the list to purchase

Re: Picture books about cats

I was going to suggest Six Dinner Sid - I read that one to my boys many years ago. Also when my daughter was little she had a book called Pussy Willow which was about a little grey kitten that got lost in the snow - that was a lovely book with beautiful pictures.
The Mog books are really nice and then there's Beatrix Potter's The Tale of Tom Kitten. The Patchwork cat is good for a bit older children - about a cat whose favourite blanket gets thrown away and she goes out to get it back. And of course there's the classic Rudyard Kipling, The Cat Who Walked by Himself.
I love cat stories

Re: Picture books about cats

The only story I can think of featuring a fat cat is 'That Fat Cat' by Christopher Evans, but there's hardly any hits for it when Googled, my children have a copy of it & I can't remember the plot but IIRC the cat in it is called Kafka
