Should cats be treated for fleas regularly?

I've got 1 cat, and he's 2 years old. He's had fleas once before. Should he be treated for fleas regularly to prevent them? Before, I've only treated him for fleas when he had them, and I don't really want to put all these chemicals on him regularly if he doesn't need them.

Re: Should cats be treated for fleas regularly?

Is he an indoor or outdoor cat? Many people who have indoor cats still flea them but not every months, maybe every 2-3 months.

Re: Should cats be treated for fleas regularly?

Hi

I'd be very interested in the answer and advice too.

My Little Miss Messi came to us from near a skip as a kitten, then her first summer with us, we had HUGE flea problem when I ended up with over 100 bites on me at one time, and I became paranoid and obsessive at treating the flat and her, and couldn't believe it when one day, I woke up and there were no new bites!!!

She's fully in doors as we live on a second floor apartment, and this is her 2nd summer and I somehow resisted giving her the drops, although she has a new flea collar every so often. I'm pleased to report that we had no flea problem this summer, and wondered if it is still advisable to treat her anyhow, or just 'wait and see'.

Re: Should cats be treated for fleas regularly?

We only treat our indoor cats if we see fleas, or if we introduce a new animal into the house. This works for us. However, we only use good quality flea treatments bought from the vet (in our case Stronghold) that completely clear any flea problem with one treatment.

Re: Should cats be treated for fleas regularly?

I only use drops ( from the vet ) on my outdoor cats if I see them scratching more than usual, or if I were to see fleas. That might be once a year or less. I might also treat the house once a year with Indorex or similar and I find this all perfectly effective.
Like many others I resist using strong chemicals without need.

Re: Should cats be treated for fleas regularly?

I use spot on drops. It's supposed to be once a month but I find I can leave it longer. I've left it 2 or 3 months before and even longer than that it the winter. My cats are outdoor cats.

Re: Should cats be treated for fleas regularly?

All my cats have been indoor cats with no contact with any other animals.I have never routinely treated my cats for fleas.I'm not a fan of using chemicals unnecessarily.Even Bumble ,who was semi feral cat with out door access was only treated if he had fleas which was very rarely

Scamps an outdoor cat but we only treat if he scratches more, although it doesn't seem to be fleas, I think it's mozzie bites as we have a stream at the end of the garden. We use stronghold from the vets to

Re: Should cats be treated for fleas regularly?

my last cat was an outdoor cat, but she was hardly deflead, twice a year or so, she got wormed when she was at the vets, as there was no way she was letting me put a wee pill in her mouth lol.
