Question All the advice you can throw at me...

...And please save the swearing about the irresponsible breeders for another day.

Anyway.

I have acquired a male kitten, he is VERY young. This makes me sad. they were initially advertising him as ready to go next week and viewings welcome before. So I went along to go and see this little guy expecting him to be something like 10-11 weeks.

No.

He is, and I kid you not, 5-6 at the most. He is TINY. But they did try to convince me he is just the runt/mummy is small, it's genetics blah blah blah. Now, mummy is indeed small but even she still has the look of kitten about her so I'm not convinced she is an adult yet. I was taken to this house by the lady that had advertised him, she was doing it as a favour to a neighbour) and she walked in and shouted, "Oi [name]! CAT!" a voice in the house yells back, "He's in there somewhere" so there's some rummaging around, how they ever found him in all that mess is a wonder, and she came back with this kitten that was barely bigger than her hand.

She went on to explain that this was the last kitten in this particular litter and it was just the smallest. Mummy had basically given up feeding them and this little guy was on proper kitten food already which I'm sure isn't quite right (please correct me if i'm wrong, i've never had a kitten this young before.) She'd had a variety of shape and coloured kittens in the past including a couple of tabbies that were knocking about in the house with some dogs too but I can't even begin to go in to that.

Then this voice yells again, "Can they take him today, we need him gone?" I was going to say we'd spend the week considering it and then turn them down, even though they didn't want any money for him, because I just wasn't sure I'd do with a cat that could potentially have lots of problems by being left to fend for himself so soon... And then without really thinking I said yeah sure.

Anything I can give this little chap has got to be better than the life he was living in that, dare i say it, HAPHAZARD ZOO, but i will need your help. I've done kittens from 12 weeks old but never this young. So please, whatever you can tell me in regards to vaccinations, worming and feeding and stuff I'm ready to take on board.

I am getting him seen at the vet next week, I should add. I don't think he's ever met the vet before

Re: All the advice you can throw at me...

Bless him, what a start in life. Hopefully someone with experience will be along shortly

I don't agree with buying from these types of homes as it is just encouraging them to carry on breeding... which no doubt they will do, anyway let's hope your little man is fit and healthy and good luck at the vets. ((no swearing))

Ps)) does he have a name yet?

Re: All the advice you can throw at me...

I didn't pay for him, if they wanted money I'd have walked away, i wouldn't encourage that kind of behaviour. :-/ They just gave him to me, it just felt like they wanted him out of the house and didn't give a flying feck what becomes of him.

He seems happy enough, investigating everything and has made himself a friend in my 4 year old son

Talking of my son, he is insisting we call kitty Figaro. I have no idea where he heard the name or why he wants it but he has decided. Figaro. Might end up being Figgy

Re: All the advice you can throw at me...

This really does sound as if you have rescued this kitten from a horrible home and a huge well done for doing that, i do hope you can get him to your vets asap so that he then has a full check up and you can then arrange for all the required jabs etc, at least he will now get some one to one love and affection now and im sure he will be absolutely fine in a few weeks. The only sad part is you can bet that these BYB'S will go on to have more kittens, i so wish some authority would jump on these people so hard. best wishes for the little guy............Chris.

Re: All the advice you can throw at me...

ahhh poor little guy

It might be worth hand rearing him for a while longer in between solid foods as well, since he should be with his mum another 2-3 weeks yet. I had to do it once when i had a kitten too young and the vets gave me a big tin of powder milk.

Re: All the advice you can throw at me...

Figaro is the cat in Pinocchio Is he black and white?

Pity you couldn't take the Mummy cat too, as that way you could have ensured she was spayed and your little Figaro would have learnt proper cat behaviour from her. Kittens stay with their Mums not just for food but also to learn vital socialisation. Pity the people you got him from didn't understand that.

Your vet will be able to give him a good check and arrange for the vaccinations when he needs them. He will also need worming and flea treatment if he has never seen a vet before.

If you do have any problems with behaviour etc, the forum is the best place to ask for advice.

Welcome to your forever home Figaro. x

Good luck with little Figaro, we need pics!!! Does he have any 'little friends' if he does it is worth popping him to the vets today for a proper flea treatment and wormer.

Maybe you could call the RSPCA and report the state of this house and the overcrowding of the animals there?!
