Re: Makes me sad
Quote:
I agree and hope there is a law that it is illegal to sell kitten, puppies or any animals that are very young. I suppose it's all depend with the RSPCA they've been brilliant with us when our beloved old persian was very ill with he was almost 20 years old we thought we would have lost him there and then but the rspca took him in and he recover over night starting eating like a pig he even managed to run around which he didn't do for months, we had another good month with him sadly we lost him at the end of January there is only so much an old body can take. ![]() Again 2 months ago we were tricked in having a very sick kitten rspca was brilliant poor thing had to be put down so sad . Our experiences with the rspca has been brilliant we can't fault them but I do know there are bad ones out there such a shame they are suppose to look after animal welfares. |

Re: Makes me sad
There is one in Huddersfield where I live, they sell kittens and all sorts of rodents and rabbits
, they all look so miserable and bored, I only go in because they are the only place where I can find proper gerbil food, but a of yesterday I am making my own mix so I wont go there ever again, unfortunately other people will and they will walk away with one of the poor creatures ![]()

Re: Makes me sad
I was young and naive when i bought that kitten. Didn't even know at the time that 6 weeks was too young to be away from their mum! Unfortunately that's probably the case with many people. Don't know any better, and if a pet shop owner says "oh yes they're very healthy, old enough to leave their mum" etc, who are they to disbelieve them? Until it all goes horribly wrong and the pet gets sick
or dies ![]() The sad truth of the matter is that the majority of the time if the RSPCA visit a pet shop with under age kittens, the pet shop can just say "yeah we found them dumped outside the shop this morning" or "someone came in desperate to get rid of their kittens, we took them in and are making sure they're fully up to scratch health wise before we sell them" ...End of! What can the RSPCA say to that? The same goes with the underweight rabbit. "Yep, someone brought him/her in so we are looking after it" ...I expect this is what probably happened with this pet shop! Sadly many people look at pet shops as if a rescue. A place to dump their unwanted pets! Well usually everyone has a local pet shop, so why take an unwanted litter to a rescue miles away when you could dump them on a local pet shop to make a profit out of them! ...there are many irresponsible pet owners who will not neuter there male and female cat (for example) then they'll have kittens, after 5-6 weeks they've had enough and will just hand them over. Even if the pet shop do pay for them and give the person £50 for 5 kittens, they will then sell them for £80 - £100 EACH!Pet shops rely on these people! without such idiotic irresponsible pet owners in the world how would they make a distinctive profit? This pet shop in particular, was/is a fairly big shop, where as you walk in is the counter, pet supplies and fish at the front... And at the back, with the door shut leads to the dog kennels - which you can't go through unless you ask. The small puppies were kept in pathetic little cages - with the rest of their litter i must add! No space to play of course, then there is another door leading to some small kennels where they keep the bigger dogs. This 5 month puppy i mentioned earlier was an old English Sheepdog - fully grown! Stuck in a poxy Kennel with nothing but food and water and a floor covered in Newspaper and of course because the door is shut they're unsocialised. Horrible, horrible conditions to be in at that age but at £600 (unvaccinated, not even microchipped or anything) I guess they wouldn't be easy to sell. Can see where the pet shop might of got away with it with the excuses for the kittens and other small animals. But how the RSPCA took no action with the puppies being kept in this environment is beyond me!! Upstairs were the rabbits, birds, hamsters, kittens etc (out of sight and unsocialised) I've never stumbled across a pet shop that gives a monkeys about animal welfare! All that matters to them is that they make a profit. People can buy pet food and accessories anywhere, and they do nowadays, so the only way they can make a 'successful' profit is through animals! ![]() Apologies for the rant ![]() If all the irresponsible pet owners were PTS the world would be a much better place! ![]()

Re: Makes me sad
Unfortunately all the petshops here sell animals - they're not allowed to sell dogs & cats but our local one currently has rabbits, hamsters, rats and the obligitory fish for sale.
Unlike some shops I've seen in the past (years ago in Aus mind) these appear to be doing the right thing by the animals - they are in large, clean display cases with plenty of food, water & bedding toys and places to hide and the lighting is relatively soft not those harsh bright lights you see some places.. I no nothing about keeping rabbits so they might need something else - but the hamsters & rats at least appear to be well looked after...ofc others with more experience may disagree. notsure |
