Question Letting your cat out - advice plz

Hi guys,

I have recently moved house to a 4 in a block upstairs flat. Previously our 3 cats were outdoor cats during the day until around 8pm and then they were kept in overnight. As we were a ground floor flat at the time the cats got out through a small window we left open. My question is does anyone have any advice on letting the cats out now that we are an upstairs flat? A cat flap would really be a last option thing as its a council property and I'm not sure they'd be too happy with it. The cats are used to coming and going as they please so I don't really want to let them out for the first time and shut the door incase they don't come back. Any advice/inventive ideas would be much appreciated! Sorry for the long post!

I have to admit I would be inclined to now keep them as indoor cats. Where I live there is a poor ginger cat that obviously gets put out when the owner goes to work and has no way to get back in. The other day we got home in torrential rain and the poor little thing was hiding under a bush

I just feel that keeping them as house cats would be unfair now after having them as outdoor cats for 2 years. Every time we open the door they all run down stairs to get out. The cats would only ever be let out when we were in the house. I don't like letting them out when we aren't in incase they got hurt and we didn't know.

I think your only option would be a cat flap if you are upstairs? There's not really any other way for them to get out unless you are going to leave the door open all day?

Re: Letting your cat out - advice plz

Thanks,

I was just wondering if anyone had any inventive ideas, just I know that this forum is always full of great ideas

Has anyone installed a cat flap in a upvc door themselves? If so was it easy?

Aww, little puss needs one of those cosy cat kennels for when he can't get inside. Poor wee man.

Yeah my husband made one for Scamp, even though he has a flap as well, but still the little bugger sits under the car or the bushes right next to the house There's almost always one of us in as we all work different hours and we call him in when the weather is bad but he prefers to sit it out

Hi I am in a first floor flat that is a council flat, i wrote to the council and asked permission for a cat flap to be fitted, and now my furbabies has their own door. good luck.

And they actually allowed this? I would have thought they wouldn't be happy about a flap being installed, that's why I was thinking of the cat flap as a last resort!
