Best way to store open tins?

After receiving my Smilla and 40l bag of OKO from Zooplus today undamaged (whoop!) I have given the kittens a bit of Smilla in their tea. I've never seen them eat like it since they've been here and that's only with a tiny bit in - here's hoping it's a sign! Anyway, what's the best way to store cans in the fridge? I've not got any of those lids for the cans so is there anything else I can use til I get some?

I just put some cling film over the part used can and pop it in the fridge.I always use them up within 24 hours though.

Re: Best way to store open tins?

If you are never likely to use a whole tin then get some of these kinds of covers:

Armitage Can Covers

I have some I got free with some brand of cat food many years ago.

Unless your house is very very warm, it's probably OK to leave the tins out as long as they are covered and you are going to use them in a few hours - cold food never worked for my cats.

Re: Best way to store open tins?

I have always been taught that you should not store open canned food in tins – so I store it in a airtight plastic container.

I'm naught I just put them in the fridge, usually with the spoon still in...

Mine do all get eaten within the next 6-8 hours...

I do this too. I bought extra large containers that hold the cans, though I'm thinking I will start to put the contents straight into an airtight container instead and get rid of the tins altogether.

Don't put the tins in the fridge

Put the food in a container and cover with cling film.

Re: Best way to store open tins?

I use the plastic tin lids and just pop tin in the fridge. A can is never in there for more than 12 hours so I can't see a problem with that.

Cling film should do the trick in the short term. I DO NOT recommend the tin lids from PAH as they are slightly on the small side and don't sit as well on the tins as they should.

Some possible options:

Chef Aid Tin Can Food Cover Lid Cat Dog Pet *Cheapest* | eBay

Dog Cat Food Tin Tinned Cover Covers Lid Lids Top x 3 | eBay

Some supermarkets sell them - morrisons for us - but others don't.

Re: Best way to store open tins?

Zooplus sell tin lids, both for 200/400g tins and 800g tins.

Just out of interest, what's supposedly wrong with putting tins in a fridge? Never heard that one before
