Playmate for my kitten?

Hello, I have a 16 week old kitten and I am thinking of getting another kitten of about the same age to keep him company as I plan to keep him as an indoor cat. Does anyone have any experience/advice? If I get another kitten, should i get another male or a female and how easy is the introduction likely to be?

Re: Playmate for my kitten?

I've just done the same thing. I got a kitten at 12-13 weeks, and almost immediately started feeling guilty that I didn't get two to keep each other company. Two weeks later I got the second kitten who was 19 weeks old by then (same dad, different mum). I didn't do the slow intro due to their ages and having been living together up to two weeks before.

The little kitten was definitely put out at first, and there was lots of hissing mainly from her - the older kitten didn't hiss. However, by the next day the hissing had all but stopped. The little one does still seem to bully her big sister bit (the older one isn't allowed near any food until the little one is finished even though they have separate bowls, so I have to feed them in different rooms) but they really are getting on really well now.

My only regret is that I didn't get them at the same time. I couldn't imagine my life without them both now. The only problem I have is now instead of one kitten insisting I get out of bed at 5.30am, I now have two of them at me!

Re: Playmate for my kitten?

I have 2 kittens (brother and sister) and it's lovely watching them play together, groom each other, snuggle up and sleep together. Even though I have a dog I think I'd feel really guilty if I only had one since I work 3 days a week and it would be 'alone' for those 3 days.

Obviously it will be harder introducing a new kitten when they haven't grown up together etc but since he is still quite young it should be quite easy - easier than if they were adults anyway.

Sex doesn't really matter (as long as you get them neutered, obviously) I have a boy and a girl and they get on great.
