Introducing a kitten to the house

I have two dogs, and already one resident female neutered cat who is 15 months old and we've been thinking about getting a kitten.

Must be crazy.

Lol, anyway we've already stocked up on things like beds, few toys, and a very big cat tree that reaches our ceiling that the kids get in o.o

We are planning on raw feeding the new kitten as well.

What's the best way of introducing the new one to the household and does it matter on sex? And what should I be looking for in a kitten, I REALLY want a birman they are so lovely, I like the colourpoint one? Brown nose/feet/tail with cream body?

Re: Introducing a kitten to the house

I don't know much about the different breeds of cat but I'd recommend keeping the kitten in a separate room to all other animals to begin with. Only allowing visual contact for small amounts of time to begin with. There's a link to a page about introductions somewhere but not sure where it is - hopefully someone else will be able to help and post it for you.

After a few visual contacts and some sniffing etc I put a baby gate on the door to the room my kittens are in (I have a lab too) so Benny was able to see them but couldn't get to them. This allowed them to come out when they were ready. My kittens are nearly 5 months though so you will probably have to have a different approach with younger kittens as they will be smaller etc.

Good luck when you do get your kitten, and be sure to keep us updated with the introductions, and of course pictures

Re: Introducing a kitten to the house

That's awful. I got turned down by a rescue because they thought my big lazy 3 year old lab would be "too excitable" for a kitten. Things like that sometimes make you realise why rescues never have any space if they are so picky about potential adopters. Obviously they want the animals to go to the best home possible but it's a shame so many potentially great adopters get turned away because of silly things.
