Neighbours Cat or Hungry Stray?

Just recently we've been visited by a local tabby cat and being the push overs we are we felt sorry for him meowing at us for food and a fuss so we obliged to cut a long story short he's visited us as regular as clock work for the past 3 days and will sit on the door step for attention and food all day... were going to print one of those collars off that the RSPCA have on there website as it's always very hungry and is pretty skinny but friendly as anything so were not sure if it's got a home and just pushing it's luck or if it's homeless

Re: Neighbours Cat or Hungry Stray?

Not really got any advice but I know they will try anything for food. Next doors adopted cat will eat what they put out for her then come begging at mine as soon as she has finished!

On the other hand, my cat went missing so if he is still alive I hope he found someone like you to feed him.

Then again he might be on a special diet cos he is ill or intolerant so a collar with a note is a good idea.

Good luck.

This is what I thought which Is why we started to feel guilty in case we were actually harming him instead of helping also as of 10 minutes ago he was still on our door step (8:30pm)

Re: Neighbours Cat or Hungry Stray?

I would still be tempted to feed him I'm afraid - I feel more guilty leaving them hungry

well the cat was crying outside so we let him in it seems very reluctant to lay down or not be on it's feet and will sit on it's hind legs or crouch instead it purrs constantly as well

Re: Neighbours Cat or Hungry Stray?

I would take it to a vet to see if it has a microchip, and put up posters around your street etc asking if anyone is missing a cat

I would never advise putting a collar onto a possibly stray cat. Attaching a note to a pre existing collar, yes, but I wouldnt put a collar on a cat you think is someone elses They may have chosen for the cat not to have a collar.

Re: Neighbours Cat or Hungry Stray?

This happened to us last year and we were reluctant to feed it incase it was a neighbours cat. However, like yours it kept returning and eventually we let her in. We took her to the vets but she had no chip. We contacted RSPCA and Cats protection but they had no reports of it. We didn't use an RSPCA collar but bought a cheap collar and put to contact us if found.....this way an anoyed owner would ring us. We did not want anyone to pick up the cat knowing it was lost and keep it.
A month later another cat appeared so we put a collar on that too......fortunately this one returned home and the owner phoned the next morning to ask why I had put a collar on her cat.
I told her we had only done it to locate the owner and ensure it had a home. We then found out that they owned the 1st cat too and that the 2nd one was one of her kittens. She had run away because they had kept two of her kittens and wouldn't come home. She told us that she could come and collect the 1st cat and take her to RSPCA for rehoming or we could keep her. She came to check it was her and that she was happy and left her with us !!! We have now had her for 12 months!
