cat really ill since vet

Hi can you ps help me as my 12yr old cat is really unwell, he just lays on his seat, can no longer walk and has lost so much weight. Can anyone here ps give me some advice as my vet does not seem to know what the problem is.
It all started about 2 months ago when my cat was a healthy happy cat but had a problem with his eye being cloudy which we thought was maybe a cattarach. We took him to the vet but was told by the vet that it may be a ruptured retina and was given no medication, we took him home but after 2 more weeks his eye started to swell very badly and even had blood pooling inside, so we again took him back and was advised to have the eye removed which we agreed. Upon inspection of removed eye we was told there was no sign of Cancer or abscess. We also had is claws cut as they was getting long. This is when all the problems started, since we took him home he seems a different cat, he has lost so much weight and can no longer walk, "we thought may be de to claws being cut too short" Its like he has no will to live anymore. We have taken him back 3 times but vet cannot find a reason for his weight/walk problems. It has cost us nearly £1000 in vet fees but feel we are not getting any awnsers about his rapid decline in health! Do you think he may of had a Stroke or heart attack? Thanks in advance and sorry for the long drawn thread.

Sorry to hear about your cat.

Have you tried getting a second opinion if they can offer no solutions?

Have they checked your cats blood levels?

I am so sorry to hear your cat is so sick, I know how heart breaking it is when they will not eat or move. Did your cat have their blood pressure taken? My dear cat Mo had high blood pressure and this showed initially in her eye?

What foods have you been tempting with?

Re: cat really ill since vet

Hi thanks v much for your quick replys
Re second opinion: Yes we are looking for another vet atm. They did test the bloodcount for anemia/glucose/diabetes, but dont think it was a full count.
Re blood pressure/food: Good point there but I dont think they did this? It does make sense as they always test humans BP wen we visit Dr's. Re: Food. I have tried everything availiable for cats and for humans, he will not even eat his fav chicken

Ps: Do you think I can maybe claim back any money or get future help with vet fees? There are no RSPCA vets where i live and it would be too much trouble as my cat really gets stressed/sick if i go too far away.

Your poor cat. Not sure what I can add except please try to get a second opinion. Where do you live? There may be other PF members who could recommend a vet in your vicinity. Also, is your cat insured? That may help with the costs.

Please keep us updated!

Re: cat really ill since vet

Yes, I don't think any insurance company would take him on now. Most have a cut-off age of 9 I think, but with this new illness the insurance wouldn't cover him regardless of his age .

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but hopefully someone who lives near Colchester will be along soon to advise re good vets.

Try to at least keep him hydrated if he's not eating anything. Hope you get to the bottom of this soon!

Defo ask about blood pressure ASAP this can cause no end of problems. I know fish flakes on the top of food can sometimes work well. Didnt with my cat despite them being a favourite all her life, but worth a try. Chicken is quite bland so that might not work. Have you tried putting some mushed up food (pate style) onto his paw or in the mouth? Blood pressure can cause temporary blindness it can also cause nausea as well.
Keep trying I know how awful you will be feeling

Re: cat really ill since vet

Sorry your kitty isn't well. I can echo what others have said about a second opinion and see another vet.

I hope he gets better soon

Query for other members: Would this be classed as pre exsisting for insurance as there has been no diagnosis?

Em xxxx

Re: cat really ill since vet

A GA can cause kidney problems in older cats, after ops. Was your cats kidney function checked along with other blood testing? Failing kidneys is a common problem in older cats, and recent GA can tip this over into acute failure.

You won't get any refund back from your vets, all animals react differently to ops and GA. I am so sorry, and hope your boy turns the corner soon. How long ago was his op? Is he eating? What meds is he on just now?

The eye sounded like it did realy need to be removed, so don't beat yourself up about going ahead with op. Unfortunately, risks come with surgery

Fingers crossed for you and your boy.
