Freya has deserted us
I can't say for certain that nothing has happened to her, of course, and that's always there as a worry in the back of my mind, but I think the most likely thing is she's gone back to wherever she was before she came to us. She did used to disappear for a day or two and then come back.
She was never "ours". The closest she'd come to being ours was barely leaving our garden for days at a time, and having all her meals here. She came in the house a few times to eat, but always with the door open so she had an escape route available. Last Wednesday evening was the last time we saw her, we prepared breakfast for her on Thursday, but she wasn't there, and we haven't seen her since.
I feel sad and more than a little guilty. We did have plenty of opportunity to lure her right in and close the door behind her, but we were taking things slowly and trying to give her time to get used to us. I'm beginning to wonder if she has owners somewhere who had gone away for August and just left her and Eva to fend for themselves, and now they've come back and she's gone home to them. It makes me feel worse in a way because she and Eva were thin, full of worms and covered in fleas when they came to us (which is why we assumed they were strays), and I hate to think of her going back to that level of "care".
There's no point to this thread really, other than to say Freya is gone, and I'm beginning to think she's probably gone for good.
