HELP! Cat washing manically

My 2 year old cat is washing manically all over, really fast as if he is trying to get something off his fur but there is nothing there. What could be the matter? Should we call the vets?

Re: HELP! Cat washing manically

I believe over grooming can be a sign if stress has there been any changes at home recently which could be stressing kitty out?

Re: HELP! Cat washing manically

My other cat kept jumping on him trying to play fight and he wasn't happy, maybe that's the problem? We've just split them up for a few minutes to give kitty some peace.

Has this just "happened" .Has he been outside and has come in like this.He may have been in contact with something that is irritating his skin.

yes it started about half an hour ago. Shall I just let him wash or is it best to call the vets?

I would give them a call and ask their advice.Does his skin look red or sore .It is really hard to advise over the internet,it may be nothing to worry about but if he has been in contact with some substance it may be toxic.Sorry I cant be any more help.If it was me I would err on the side of caution.

I think his skin is slightly red. We're taking him to the vets just to be safe- I don't like seeing him distressed! I hope we're not wasting the vets time but I don't want to risk anything!

Re: HELP! Cat washing manically

She said something has obviously irritated his skin and he has a bit of a temperature, so she's given him a steroid injection. Not really sure what that's supposed to do? He's still washing and scratching, and she said if he's no better then to take him back tomorrow...
