Re: HELP! Cat washing manically

she checked him all over and just said the skin was irritated, so I don't think there's anything in his fur. He has been outside this morning, when he went out he was fine and he came back in doing this washing. He's so unhappy and I don't know what to do. Do steroids help allergic reactions?

i think the steriod injection will help to stop the itching, i guess its hard to know what has caused it. poor kitty,

Re: HELP! Cat washing manically

Did your vet not give you any ideas as to whether this was a contact allergy or possibly something he has eaten. The steroid injection should alleviate the itchiness of his skin, but if there is no improvement over the next couple of hours i would be inclined to either take him back later today or phone for advice.Poor chap it must be so uncomfortable.

Re: HELP! Cat washing manically

she thinks it's a contact allergy, but she's not running any tests yet. I assume she will if it hasn't gone by tomorrow. He hasn't been fed anything out of the ordinary. I really don't want to wait that long, but my dad seems to accept what the vet said. I'm just a nervous wreck!

If there is no improvement soon I have to admit I would also not be happy. The steroids usually are fairly quick acting.I had a cat who was on steroids for a contact allergy, what it was we never discovered. He responded fairly quickly to steroids.

Re: HELP! Cat washing manically

If it becomes a continuous behaviour, i.e. continues for days on end without him coming in to contact with things that could trigger an allergic reaction, it could be feline OCD due to stress.

Re: HELP! Cat washing manically

I too would call the vets to get some more advice, perhaps ask about using an OTC anti histamine such as Piriton.

Re: HELP! Cat washing manically

The steroids seemed to take a long time to kick in but I now have a very lethargic kitty having a doze. Thanks everyone!
