Cat ill,vets not helping,husband and I going round in circles. Think I'm going mad.

I can see you've posted in the intro section and you've tried a longer post on here that hasn't appeared - but a little more info would be useful.

From what I've managed to glean - you have an ill 13 yr old siamese and the vets aren't helping. I would be inclined to get a second opinion and go to a different practice, see a different vet and see what they say. Tell them everything.

As I say, try again to post a little more info - do it in several posts if it won't let you post really long ones and we shall try to advise.

So sorry your cat is ill and sending healing vibes.

defo go to another vet then another if you have to, maybe speak to a breeder? dont give up

July 22nd took puss to vets with lethargy,(its quite obvious when she is poorly) and quite bad breath.
The vet said she needed senior blood tests to check thyroid function as this was common in older cats (was given same waffle 5 months ago with my old boy whose bloods were fine (at £100 a pop)). Results were not bad as she was clearly dehydrated although raised white cell count indicated infection. I was told this was probably due to her teeth and she needed to have antibiotics for a week to improve her condition before she had the dental work done. The almost instant improvement was wonderful and we kinda let things lie. Then although booked in for her dental (delayed due to bank holiday) she started becoming lethargic again so I took her back and a different vet said she was dehydrated and her heart was racing then slowing then racing,and that she was a poorly girl. Another course of antibiotics to boost her before her dental didn't seem to help and the night before her breathing got worse. I tried to syringe the antibiotic into her and she almost collapsed,panting and floppy.
So feeling extremely guilty I took her in on Friday for dental and expressed my concern for her breathing. The nurse called the vet in who listened to her heart and said it had calmed and was regular and steady but her chest was bad. He recommended a chest x-ray and told me they would ring me later. By 2p.m I was getting anxious so rang and was told the x-ray showed possible asthma changes but she was coming round nicely,2 teeth were extracted, rest were cleaned,she was also groomed and had claws clipped.
When I collected her her breathing didn't look too laboured and the nurse said she could have a steroid injection to help her breathing but not till Monday when she comes back for post op review. She had been given antibiotic injection (metacam) and that I should carry on with the antirobe till Monday. However, after spending half the night with her on my chest struggling to breathe,watching her sit by the water bowl for ages and unable to get her to eat more than a teaspoon of food,I panicked.
I rang the vets who said bring her in straight away.
This vet kept saying what a poorly old lady she was,especially for a pure breed. She is a cross breed and is only 14 but they think she is 12 (my error), whereas as my boy is 19.
She also said the x-ray showed fluid around the tranchea which may be masking something underlying like a tumour, she is severely dehydrated and needs to be kept in for IV fluids,antibiotics and diuretics. I was to sign a consent form (all a blur as I was in shock and crying)and ring at 2 O'clock.
When I rang the emergency cover vet said she was showing slight improvement after being in the oxygen tent and was stable. When I asked why her chest was not priority over her teeth he said he was just following the prescribed treatment and couldn't comment. Phoning at 6 was told she is stable and the decision is ours. Do we carry on with treatment,bring her home to be with us till she goes,or ask them to finish her suffering. The treatment may help, may not.
My head is battered, I feel sick and guilty.
My mum says give her over night and see how she responds which we are doing but are we just delaying the inevitable?
I have so many unanswered questions. The main is why they put her through 2 extractions and dental when her breathing was so bad? Why was a follow up/ full blood test not advised after the first lot of antibiotics? Why did the first vet looking at the x-ray not see or discuss the fluid around the trachea when it is most definitely a big problem? How can vets milk us for all this money? Surely the cats welfare and follow up should be the priority.
This morning they've said 'small improvement,went to see her lunch time and brighter than yesterday but breathing still looks hard work,eating little bits,used litter box and been given steroids to help breathing. Been on drip over 24 hours and only improving little steps,but struggling to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
