Angry My vet says i should spray Ted with water???

So i went to the vets as Lily was looking skinny - she is healthy thank god!

Anyway while i was there i mentioned in the last few weeks Ted has been pinning her down and what looks like he is trying to mate with her. Both have been snipped so the Vet says it cannot be hormone related and she believe it is a learnt behaviour on Teds part.

She says to knock him out of this learnt behaviour i need to spray him with water when he tries to mount Lily???

Im sorry i am not spraying my cat with water so the vet suggested i make very loud noises when he tries.

So far this is not working, i feel so sorry for Lily she hates when Ted is like this. I am going to carry on with the noises for a few more weeks in the hope it does work.

Has anyone else had a problem like this?

i had to do this with my boy eddie even after he was castrated and it worked. the water is harmless but sends a strong message. just imagine what lily feels like!!

I've yet to see any genuine studies with regards to spraying your cat with water. Some people are vehemently opposed to it, others support it as a last cause, but I'd love to see some actual evidence and not just hearsay from either camp.

Never had the problem but have you tried rattling something or slapping a newspaper down hard on the sofa - I was told many years ago that that works when you want to distract a cat from something.

i would say go with your gut instinct if you dont like the water spraying idea then dont use it. Do you have any really strange noises ie a toy that would work.

We used to have a cow that made a horrendous noise when you turned it upside down. It worked on the cats when they started climbing my curtains.

Re: My vet says i should spray Ted with water???

I think if it was really upsetting the other cat, I might resort to spraying water, but only on the grounds of protecting her if she was desperate, but otherwise I'd avoid it. I wouldn't want to upset him to the point that he got scared of me and started all sorts of other behavioural problems.

I know someone who went to a animal behaviourist (OK it was for a dog, but it's worth a try) because their dog was jumping up and behaving aggressively towards men (result of previous bad treatment and fear). The behaviourist suggested filling a tin can with pebbles and giving it a good shake when the inappropriate behaviour occurred. It worked a treat.

The best way I have found to distract a cat from doing something is to either dangle their favourite toy with catnip on or to hiss at him convincingly like me .

Re: My vet says i should spray Ted with water???

We use the bang on the sofa method when our two are scrapping. I have used the water method when Hercules was younger (our vet advised it too) but I don't tend to use it unless he's being really naughty.

The idea is to distract them or do something they don't like (like hissing at them...something else I try, but they look at me like I've gone mad) so that they forget what pains in the bum they are being.

Spraying water seems to be a marmite approach, some people use it (some vets advise it!) but many won't use it at all. I find it works as a last resort kind of thing rather than usual distraction. You don't exactly drench them, I have a mini water pistol that shoots a tiny amount of water so he thinks he's been sprinkled rather than soaked.

The problem I have is that my water-cat seems to like it and runs back for more!
