Spraying water seems to be a marmite approach, some people use it (some vets advise it!) but many won't use it at all. I find it works as a last resort kind of thing rather than usual distraction. You don't exactly drench them, I have a mini water pistol that shoots a tiny amount of water so he thinks he's been sprinkled rather than soaked.

The problem I have is that my water-cat seems to like it and runs back for more!
I guess your cats work differently to mine, cause both hissing and distracting works on all 4 of my cats.

I use the hissing when my kitten ventures to far and it makes her stop and stand still for me to easily pick her up or she runs back inside.

Thanks everyone for your advice, sorry for the slow response.

I always thought spraying water would scare the cat and i really do not want to scare him. I do feel bad for Lily and i split them up every time he does it. I have a duck keyring that makes a loud noise so i will give it a go.
