Re: New Kitten

I would echo the idea of getting two. I don't really think that it is at all fair to keep any pet locked up and alone all day. We have a kitten and I am with her all day because I work from home. She spends all night alone locked in the kitchen and she is fine.
I do think that cats can adapt pretty well and as he gets older he will learn his routine. The only thing that concerns me is his activity levels. When we first got Waffles she was MAD!!! She was into everything and a real handful. Now she is a little older she has mad moments but sleeps a lot more.
Are you not worried about bonding with the kitten too? If I was you I would be worried about getting up feeding him, going to work, coming back feeding him. He might think that you are just there to feed him?? I hope that makes sense.
Good luck with whatever you decide. You do sound very kind and caring.

Re: New Kitten

I think if you are working it is unfair to get a kitten they could get into allsorts of trouble and no one will be there to rescue them. Plus if a friend/nieghber/family member are going to pop in. How long do you think they would do that they have a life too. Going in a few times a day for the next year or so they will have thier own comitments. I'm a strong believer that if you do not have the time to commit to a pet then dont have one. If you want a pet that does not take much looking after then get a hamster they will be awake and lively just about when you get in from work or a parakeet you can teach them to talk. One of my rescue cats came from a couples flat who relised they did not have the time to give him the attention he needed and there was 2 of them he was 13 weeks old at the time. He is now 6 1/2 months old and very happy because he gets all the attention he wants and not sat in a flat alone all day. Please think long and hard wether a kitten is the right pet for you. The last thing you want i'm sure is to find you can't be there for him and he is another unwanted cat looking for a new home. Most of my 7 cats were unwanted after a short time of being with thier previous owners. Sorry for the long post just airing my views. If you do decide a cat is the right pet for you then good luck and best wishes.

Re: New Kitten

i had my moggie at 12 weeks old, i live alone and i am at work from 830-530 5 days a week.

A year on she is the most well adjusted loving, playful cat i've ever seen.

leave dry food down for her, water, a litter tray, toys, somewhere cosy to sleep and 'hide', a cat tree, a window for her to nose out of and imo she willl be absolutely fine

Re: New Kitten

if you are unsure about a kitten then perhaps you could think about re homing an older cat? this will still need time to get used to life with you but im sure it would be easier than a kitten. i experienced first hand the chewing (2 sets of ipod ear fones and a laptop lead) and a year on my Ragdoll is still a bit naughty.

kittens need a lot of time 2 sociolise and they get into all sorts of trouble. the only thing i would really worry about is if i wernt there to get them out of that trouble. if someone is coming in to see them for an hour a day there are still 9 hours of that day that it will spend alone.
The idea of two kittys would be good for sociolising and an over all good idea, i think pot luck if how life goes, you could get on great with it and it could take to being left very well, or the oposit but you will never know till you try

really hope what ever you decide it goes well!!

Re: New Kitten

Hi

I got my little Missy when she was 7 wks old after a really bad experience of rescuing a kitten from a reputable centre (got her on the sunday and had to have her put to sleep by thursday - were told she was 6 weeks old but was actually only 4 weeks) any way i saw her with her mum and brothers so i knew she was coming from a good home, the person i got her from told me that they were left all day between 8 and 5, the same hours i work, and were fed 3 times a day - once on a morning, then tea time then later for supper, i was a little concerned by this as i had read that at that age they would need to be fed at least 4 times a day and at that point she was not on dry food, however when i brought her home i stuck to the same routine but after a week started leaving a good quality dry food for her and she absolutely loves i sometimes leaving her wet food and eating all of her dry food. But due to the previous experience i had i would advise to have your kitten have a nurses check at the vets (mine did it for free) just to make sure she / he is generally in good health, i did which put my mind at ease totally as i asked their advice on feeding and told them my routine and they said there was no problem with it. Missy never seems to cry to say she is hungry and she has been back to the vets since her check and is putting on weight and very healthy so i think your best to try to stick with whatever routine the kitten is on with her / his current owner and stik to the same food to avoid upsetting her / his tummy.
i would also say to buy plenty of toys to keep him/her occupied through the day, although Missy tends to sleep throughout the day, i have her locked in the kitchen and then when i get home she has mine and my partners undivided attention and we play with her until she tires herself out.
Hope this helps x

Re: New Kitten

Hi

Thank you all for your help and comments. I've asked the girl who am getting him off if he has a brother or sister unaccounted for but i'm sure the last time we spoke that she had promised the whole litter out to people. I would like another wee one to keep him company but I'm sure if thats not an option it'll work out fine with just one. I know it is a long time to leave him but i will of course leave him enough toys to play with / dry food etc to keep him occupied. I'm sure there are loads of full time workers with kittens who do the same and i just hope we'll be ok. Will keep you posted!
