Kitten losing weight??!

We have a 9 week old ?kitten. She is very small. weighed 460g 10 days ago. she was put on special food from the vet and had diarrohea. She is eating well. she now weighs 390g!. We have been given worming medicine and more food. We have been told to come back in 5 days if she hasnt passed any worms. The vet also said she has a bloated tummy. What else ca i do, should i give her kitten milk or chicken aswel to help her gain weight?

She was hand reared from 2 weeks as her mother died (car accident)

why haven't you asked your vet all these questions? surely you should be doing as your vet has suggested. it wouldn't be safe for the kitten for you to take advice on here as no one really knows what's wrong with your kitten it could be many things. i think the best thing for her would be to follow your vets advice and get some tests done. maybe a fecal sample? or some observation and blood work. i hope she's ok sounds like its really worrying you all the best and lots of good vibes for you here.

Hi and Welcome to the forum
Excuse the bluntness of certain posters, we're not all like that.
The kitten sounds tiny bless her. I'd give her lots of tiny meals as her tummy won't cope with a lot. Chicken is very good for them, I don't give kitten milk as a rule but you could try it, maybe with a little warm boiled water in it. A good quality kitten biscuit would help, something like James Wellbeloved or Royal Canin.

Thanks for you kind reply.
Im feeding her about a dessert spoon at the time. I was just worried chicken and milk might be to rich for her little belly. i will obviously ask the vet when i see her again Monday. Just thought i would try and do all i could over the weekend. She is not interested in biscuits im affraid.

I think ErbslinTrouble might be right - I would phone your vet and just run your concerns through with them. Can always say a breeder friend has suggested 'insert Selk's suggestion here' and see what they think. I wouldn't want to give any advice other than get your vet to confirm what you should be doing.

Keep us updated.

Re: Kitten losing weight??!

I am following vets advice. I just wanted to do all i could to help her in the mean time, she is so tiny. If she does pass worms over weekend, i am to weigh her after another 5 days. So just wanted advice on extra food/milk etc to help her out.

Re: Kitten losing weight??!

oh i meant to ask did the vets give you 'recovery' food for the kitten? Hills and Royal Canin make a recovery food that you can make into a paste to nurse the kitten with. but really this should be done under veterinary care or supervision if you're not confident with it. there are other posters on this forum that are very cat savvy like Selk which would be fine doing so as they know when it's not going right. but for someone like yourself that doesn't really know when something may or may not be working or know the signs of the kitten being stressed or bloated from over feeding it might be a bit much.

Re: Kitten losing weight??!

Yes we are feeding her Hills & ? presciption food, its quite big so i have been mushing it up with the back of a fork. She is well in herself and doesnt seem weak, but she is very skinny, we was told when we got her she had been wormed the day before, but not sure if that was true. Fingers crossed that is the problem. I am keeping a firm eye on her litter tray and eagerly await the wriggly things!! or monday it will be blood tests etc. Though the vet said she was worried about taking blood as she is so small. She may have a ultrasound on her tummy.

Re: Kitten losing weight??!

These are the things I use to wean my kittens onto :

Raw lean finely minced lamb (mince leg steaks)
Raw lean finely minced beef
Chicken (boiled with a little honey in the water) very finely chopped or massacred with a hand blender, mixed with evaporated milk and boiled water
Scrambled egg made with goats yogurt and lots of butter in the pan
A/D (tinned food you can get from your vets) initially mixed with evap and boiled water
Baked plaice mixed with butter

I think if she has already had tummy problems you don’t want to overload her tummy with loads of different things, but boiled chicken and white fish would be fine. Plaice is great for babies as it's so soft and easily mashed. If you want to try her with a bit of dairy, then goats yogurt is live so will aid digestion and is low lactose. If you mix a little honey in with it (or you can buy it with honey already in) that will add calories and help soothe her digestive system.

If her tummy is still bloated it may not be worms, and I think your vet should take another look at her.
