Help with found cat

Hello

My mom has a white cat that comes into her garden to sleep, he is clearly lost (or been chucked out as as very skinny).

He initally loved the whole family and my mom was prepared to maybe rehome him. Our plan was that we take him to the vets to see if he is microchipped & look to get him neutured and deflea'ed.

When we tried getting him in the cat carrier, he literally fled! Its understandable why as he doesnt trust humans. Since then he still comes but keeps us at a distance...lets us feed him and cuddle him a little but nothing like he did before.

We have advertised him as missing etc, tried the neighbours etc but nothing. He is only young (approx 9 months and the rescue centres cant help as they are full.

My mom would keep him, we have tried to coax him but dont seem to be getting anywhere with him. My mom is worrying about him being outside at night. Has anyone got any suggestions how we can convince this cat we are good people (we flea'ed and attempted to worm him - no wonder he isnt so keen on us now!) - however we had to make him more comfortable for his own sake.

He would have a good home with my mom (providing he isnt microchipped etc). He obviously liked us at the beginning as the neighbours have said that they cant get near him.

Any help would be appreciated

Zoe xxx

Re: Help with found cat

Not really an expert here but can you coax him into a doorway for food and close the door behind him? This way you can try and get him into a carrier.

Hope you manage to gain his trust again.

Re: Help with found cat

It could be a slow process, especially if the cat has been living rough for a while. I should not worry too much about him being outside as they cope well and winter is a way off yet. Just feed him on the doorstep for a while with your door open and gradually move his food just inside and then further inside with the door open. I assume there is water for him. Try playing with him even if its only a length of string but dont let him chew it. Gradually feed him with the door shut and in time leave the carrier on the floor with the door open to allow him to enter on his own. I know you are trying to gain his trust and I am sure you will suceed, just dont rush it and good luck

Re: Help with found cat

sounds like you are going to have to win his confidence again. it could take sometime to do this as you said yourself he distrusts humans. just keep feeding him and dont hurry him. with regards to shelter, do you not have a shed or something in your garden where you can put a bed for him and he can also eat there.
if not maybe make a cat house for him where he can sleep.
i haved a feral cat who with is mum i rescued earlier this year. i know it will, if ever, take a long time to gain his confidence. whenever i get near him he will freeze and he has never handled

Re: Help with found cat

Thanks for the suggestions...will buy him a cat house so at least he has a choice.
He has been in the conservatory and garage but this was when he initally liked us.
There is water available and my mom makes sure he is fed a few times a day.
Its frustrating as he could have a extremely comfortable life with my mom and did seem to want that at one point.
My mom wasnt so keen at first as he isnt neutured and she didnt want him spraying anywhere.

Will perservere with the little man as its his choice after all, he may well like being a little hobo....Thanx again

Re: Help with found cat

I had a similar situation with one of my semi adoptees, Stripey Tail. I'm guessing he's a stray/been abandoned due to him sneaking in here to steal food, my seeing him a good mile+ away from my house, but mainly down to him ambling thro' my garden one day with a 3inch wound to his neck with puncture marks either side (a dog bite?) that clearly went untreated.

He'd been using the box I leave in my shed for any passing cat looking for shelter and I'd been feeding him outside but he was understandably very wary of me, tho' with a bit of patience on my part he became confident enough to come into the house and stay in waiting for food.

I see him pretty much every day now and while he's been known to get his head down here, he much prefers to eat and go, no matter what the weather. He's happy with this setup and I'm happy to continue

Re: Help with found cat

I agree with others - it sounds like you need to build his trust up again. Keep feeding him and giving him attention and eventually try to coax him indoors. I would leave the vet and the cat carrier - which clearly freaked him out last time (and maybe brings back bad memories??) - until absolute last. Once he is indoors, and this may take a while, give him a few days to get to know you and the house before trying to get him to the vet.

Good luck with him.
