total Colectomy for a 5month kitten

Hey guys

Had some bad news about my baby Birman today What we thought initially was just an impacted hairball or faeces now looks to be either Inflammatory Bowel disease or some other congenital problem (possibly) causing an innervation problem of the bowel. Best case scenario is an infection.

On opening the abdomen they found a huge Lymphnode that looked reactive to an infection somewhere so they have taken biopsies.

In any case Jango definitely was constipated and had a condition called 'megacolon' (basically an enlarged large intestine) which means that if everything goes well and I get to take him home (please god bring him home safe...) he will need medical treatment for the condition which involves dietary modifications and probably fibre supplements. However, all the things I have read say that medical treatment always eventually fails and I will be looking at surgery which is a total colectomy (as the vet mentioned to me today too...)

Does anyone here have experience of Colectomies in cats? And in kittens specifically? The only articles I have found so far have been for elderly cats

Any help great fully received...

'a very upset Jango's Mum'

Re: total Colectomy for a 5month kitten

I am sure there is a yahoo group for megacolon, they are normally a useful resource. I know a lot of people swear by Miralax....which you have to get from the states...to manage the situation. Opinion is divided as to whether either a HIGH or LOW fibre diet is recommended.
Hopefully if it has been spotted at this early age it is something which can be dealt with more successfully, after all his body is still developing so he may well grow out of this. I do hope so.
