Hopefully if it has been spotted at this early age it is something which can be dealt with more successfully, after all his body is still developing so he may well grow out of this. I do hope so.
I was going to suggest what PP has said. There actually is a group and I would definitely consult them before making any decisions ie surgery etc. Here's the link. These groups as usually excellent in terms of information, experience etc.

Feline_Megacolon : Feline Megacolon or severe/chronic constipation

So have the vets definitively diagnosed Megacolon then? If it's Inflammatory Bowel then this is a very easy condition to manage. Is infection still on the cards?

Re: total Colectomy for a 5month kitten

Have already joined the yahoo group and put up a post - thanks for the recommendation!

Yes, definitely diagnosed mega-colon in that all the diagnosis requires is the clinical presence of an enlarged colon which he has infection is still a possible culprit and is what I am praying for as it can e easily treated.

He has had biopsies and now the immediate concern is getting the results and hoping he doesn't develop peritonitis post-operatively

Sending healing vibes to Jango and a cyber hug to you. I hope it is something that can be rectified soon.
