Argos pet insurance and dental cover

Argos pet insurance is well within my price range for my two cats (unlike more than) so was thinking of switching.

My only problem is that they do not cover dental treatments. (Only accident based).

So how does the average person with argos insurance protect against dental treatments?

One cat is covered by the pdsa. But you can only cover one pet per household.

And do argos pay the vet directly?

Thanks

They don't.

Have a look at my site (see my sig). It shows which companies cover dental work. IN most cases it's only accident cover although one or two will cover routine dental work providing you look after the animal's teeth and have an annual check up.

Feed a raw chicken wing once a week - that's the best we can do to insure against this sort of thing. Funny how with the advent of dry food (marketed as better for teeth) the incidence of tooth problems has risen so much that insurance doesn't cover it now!

I am with Argos - and you pay first and then Argos reimburse you

That's simply not true. Vet fees have gone up because they now offer many more successful treatments and medications which are expensive. They too have costs which have gone up. It's vet fees rising which is driving up insurance cover - not the other way round.

Pet insurance has been available for well over 10 years - but vet fees have only dramatically increased over the last three or four. There are clinical procedures available now which cost well into the thousands (I had a quote of £10,000 for a heart op on a puppy to repair malformed valves) and most people don't have that kind of money to spare.

At the other end of the scale my last vet visit cost me £11 for a consultation and about £5 for medicine. That was for a new illness on a dog without previous problems. £11 for 20 minutes? And they have to pay for the building, services, equipment, staff...?

Yes, there are profiteering vets. But not that many - and it's got nothing to do with insurance.

I was given this statement by two different vets, as well as Pet Plan sales person - just relaying what I was told...

Wow where do you live? - who do you use? - is there a house for sale nearby?

I thought we were ding well now we were out of London rates (£35 flat rate consultation fee) and in Dorset (£18 consultation fee). In London it was horrendous - to spay a female dog ranged from £145 - £260, to spay a cat from £65 (cheapest I could find) to £110. 3 sets of annual jabs set me back over £180 last time. Soooooo hoping for a bit cheaper down here.

edit: when we were in the Falklands vets fees came at cost - annual jabs were about £3.50! A friends dog was very poorly for about 3 weeks - stayed in the vets all that time, had numerous blood tests, transfusions, medication, X-rays, and finally put to sleep etc, total cost TOTAL - £35!!!!!!! Okay they didn't pay for the vets time and the building etc the government down there subsidised that - but when an Xray here can cost up to £100 it really makes you think about the ACTUAL cost of stuff.

Re: Argos pet insurance and dental cover

My cat was sick on the kitchen floor overnight and listless, took her to our vets, and it cost me £800 !!

She was taken to their posh hospital, had blood taken when she was at her worst -and the blood test alone cost £70 which was lost and no outcome ever found. She was kept in for 3 days and nights and let out with 'suspected pancriatis' so we never really did get to the bottom of her problem. I had medicines and she was better and back to normal after.

I used Tesco Pet Insurance, and the vets wanted to know straight away if i was insured and I never saw the itemiised bill. They said if I paid a 'admin fee!!!' of about £15 they would claim on my behalf and I would not have to do anything. I paid the first £50 excess.

All this happened at the very time we had a family crisis (elderly mum found on floor over night, and hospitalised) So i was being pulled in a few directions at the time and just let the vets get on with their job.

But just to say Tescos were brilliant - they paid the bill without a quibble. it was the best £4.95 per month pet premium I have ever paid!!!
And thank god I had it!
I know next years will increase now and probably not cover that illness again...but still would recommend them to anyone.

Re: Argos pet insurance and dental cover

My experience of pet insurance was not good, I gave it up years ago after a claim for our cat (£600) was rejected on a technicalty. When I got my two yorkies I decided not to have insurance based on being told that "1 in 3 pets will need vets treatment before they are 7yrs old. That told me that 2 in 3 won't! The odds are in our favour. I opened a standing order for the going rate of insurance, started it off with £100 and only took money out of the account if I thought I could claim on an insurance. 15 years later and many dips into the account including one for £2000 for a cancer op...I still had over £1000 in the account when I lost my last yorkie. You have to be brave and forget the account is there. But I have proved it can work. The mere fact the that the world and his wife wants to get into insurance means it is a paying game. Now I have two more yorkies I have done the same again...only this time I can start the account off with the £1000 I still have!
