The odds are in our favour. I opened a standing order for the going rate of insurance, started it off with £100 and only took money out of the account if I thought I could claim on an insurance. 15 years later and many dips into the account including one for £2000 for a cancer op...I still had over £1000 in the account when I lost my last yorkie. You have to be brave and forget the account is there. But I have proved it can work. The mere fact the that the world and his wife wants to get into insurance means it is a paying game. Now I have two more yorkies I have done the same again...only this time I can start the account off with the £1000 I still have!
Which is perfectly fine unless your new dog has an accident that costs £5,000 for surgery after you have had it for a couple of months. Insurance may be evil - but for most people it's a necessary evil

Indeed - we'd had Minnii insured for 2 months (at £3.50 a month) when she was diagnosed with HCM - total cost of treatment over £2250!!!!! I worked out I'd have to save the premiums for 42 years to pay that. Don't think my £7 would have made a dent in it if I'd just been saving. She's also broken her foot twice and they paid over £250 for that.

Having said that her condition is no longer covered - new vets and they wanted to rescan her at another £1000 cost - but she's not insured so they then changed their minds and said she didn't need it and they weren't going to do anything with the info anyway (I hadn't indicated whether or not I was going to have it done at that point, the conversation changed when they found out she wasn't insured anymore). I was actually quite disgusted that they wanted to put a vulnerable cat under a stressful procedure that could kill her if she was insured, but didn't see the point if she wasn't.
