Neutering ages

Hi,
What is the best age to neuter a male? my local vet said today that neutering before 5 months can be dangerous? However I want to get my 2 done as soon as I can, they are 14weeks old.

Re: Neutering ages

many vets including mine have a weight minimum - usual weight for 6 month kitten, because of the anesthetic

other vets will do this younger

tbh i like my vets, and everyone recommends them round here, so i let mine wait

Re: Neutering ages

Some Vets will early neuter and some won't, I would ring round Vets in your area and see what their policies are, my vets say 2kg or 6 months but Monty went in slightly early as I had two of the opposite sex and started to worry but his ahems were all present and correct so they went ahead and did him. I think some Vets will do it from 12 weeks.

Re: Neutering ages

when we got Colin the guy there said coz his had droped (Colins i mean )
that we could have him done then at 12 weeks but would be down to the vet. when we took him and asked about this he said yes it could be done BUT it would be to dangerous anistetic wise his body would not be able to withstand it as well as if he were 5 months so we are waiting untill he is 5 months. personaly i wouldnt do it untill older as if you think there still babies. would you do something like that to your baby?

Well no! But I also wouldn't expect my baby to be able to have sex and get another pregnant at that age either I know how hard it is dealing with a litter of kitten's because some silly person couldn't get their cat done, who now lives with me, and I'm struggling because of it (2days without sleep, really begin to affect you in the end) x

Early neutering is routinely done in the US and NZ - we are just slow here to pick up on the health BENEFITS of this. So 'yes, I would.'

Re: Neutering ages

I would think that they need longer than 14-16 weeks to mature, therefore it would be too early to neuter. Doesn't early neutering have any adverse effects, like stunted growth or anything?

Quite the opposite. Hormones are what tell the growth plates in the bones to close and fuse. Neutering before sexual maturity causes the growth plates to close later resulting in a longer bone lengths, although to be fair you're unlikely to see a difference just by looking at the adult cat size. There have been various studies into this in dogs, i'm sure there have been studies in cats but none I can link to i'm afraid.

Re: Neutering ages

Archie was done at six months and a lot of that was to do with his size and weight.
