I dont normal get to pet Kira as she is very very skittish and will really only let my mom pet her but I did get a chance to last night and I believe she has really lost some wieght

She isnt skin and bones but I could feel her spin even with all that fur.

Now Kira doesnt leave my moms room really and we have now shut her in there for most times as my younger cats get on her nerves with their play fighting and Horris steals her food out of her bowl.

Kira really is my first elder cat so was wondering what kinds of things you do to help your older cats regrading health play etc.

Kira has never been to the vets while we had her going on must be tens years. So Im thinking a vet visit may be in order.

I think a vet visit is definitely in order. Any weight loss should be investigated and not just put down to 'old age' or whatever. You say you've had Kira 10 years - did she come to you as a kitten or older? There are numerous conditions that could cause weight loss but only a vet can tell you what is causing it. You mustn't ignore it though. It may be that she has something that is perfectly treatable with a bit of tlc & vet care. Senior cats (about 7years and above) should have yearly blood tests really so that any conditions can be caught in the early, more treatable stages. Close monitoring & prompt vet care would be the two best things you could do to help any older cat.

Im going to mention to my mom that she should take her to see a vet. I know there could be tons more to it then just age but I think her being in her mid to late teens could be part of it.

She was an older cat my aunt had adopted her and had her for several years then my aunt passed away Kira was going to the pound but my mom said no and took Kira home with another of my aunts cats. So kira is defiantly a very close buddy for my mom.

Ill mention this to my mom. Think tonight Ill pick up Kira fav wet food for her.

Its just sad cause Kira is old and its sad cause I dont want to upset my mother as I know Kira is very close for her

Weight loss in older cats (or indeed any cat) should definitely be looked into. This is because there are conditions associated with older cats that can attribute to this. One of the big ones is hyperthyroidism. This is quite common and very treatable though it requires dedication to giving medication on a daily basis. They will test for this by taking a blood sample from the kitty .

So don't be afraid. You don't know what it is yet, but you would be doing the right thing by taking the cat to the vets instead of delaying and making any probable condition worse.

Im not really afraid as such as Im just worried how upset my mother will get.

Im going to find kira and take outside and have a good look over her, give her a brush and nail trim.

I did mention it to her and so when I go back in a few weeks will take Kira with us.
