I totally agree with this. If something is important to you and you're stupid enough to leave it in a house that you are renting out ..... tenants don't have to have pets to trash the place.

It sounds like you've got old walls, and they crumble away easily. I think in the old days people used to patch them up by stuffing screwed up newspaper in the holes and then packing it with plaster - I know that's what we did in our old farmhouse - but I'm not sure if there's a more modern way of doing it that would give you a more solid wall when you've finished.

Shutting the door after the horse.... Try PetPals for insurance, They do a tenant policy that covers damage. Won't help for the damage already done but might help for anything else that happens.

There's a link to PetPals onCat Insurance Compare

Re: Cats and rented accomodation.

Sounds stupid but is this covered under your home contents insurance. I am a home owner so have combined buildings and contents cover but there was something you could opt for about pet damage.

Curtain poles might come under fixtures and fittings and be under buildings cover poss or might be contents I'm not sure think it would depend on your cover and if you or the landlady are insured for pets and have accidental damage cover you might be able to claim back money for new curtains/ repairs. It's always worth checking would all depend on the policies and level of cover. Your landlady should definitely have some kind of insurance.

Re pet insurance mine are both insured with Tesco and it's about £8 a month for 2 cats for the best cover they do. Not ideal as it isn't proper life cover but it's what I could afford at the time and much better than nothing.

Another thing is are the cats def ok. If a pole or anything fell on them might be worth checking they don't have any hidden damage. Cats hide pain well.

To answer the persons question about shutting cats away. Mine get the run of the house when I'm in, when I'm out or I'm trying to sleep and they are in hyper mode they either get shut in the loft room where they get access to the loft and stairs (it's like a proper room not a musty old loft) when it's too freezing for them to be out the back or they get the back area which is the bathroom, hall and long utility room (well it should be a utility room but it's actual a cat room now houses their cat tree, toys, hidey holes etc). I'd prefer them to have the run of the house when I'm out and they did for a while, but Boo decided he likes scratching off the kitchen wallpaper when he's unsupervised and I'm not too happy with that funnily enough!! It's more than enough space for 2 cats and they get to chase each other endlessly when I'm around.

Re: Cats and rented accomodation.

thanks ppl, i suppose if they get used to being shut in a room then it wont bother them. But i would be worried about them not being able to escape each others company if they had a falling out

Re: Cats and rented accomodation.

Might be worth showing a few pics of the damage and curtains, see if anyone here knows where to get some?
