Hi, I have been feeding Royal Canin Sensitivity Control to my 10 week old kitten for a week now as she has had a tummy bug and has been on antibiotics.
She loves this food and as shes very underweight for her age, its good that shes been eating a lot of it.
I tried to reintroduce normal food yesterday which upset her tummy again, so I'm wondering how long is it advisable to feed the sensitivity control for?
I would be happy to feed it to her for a while but I don't want her to miss out on vital vitamins etc that she needs to grow..

RC Sensitivity control is a complete food and is formulated so it can be fed for long periods of time and even indefinitely (not that I would recommend that). Is it the wet you are feeding? If she is doing well on it then there's no reason to look to change things in the near future.

Edited- for extra re-assurance see the link below from RC which states that in cases of food intolerance and allergies you should continue with Sensitivity Control for the pets lifetime (personally I don't agree with this but it backs up that it's okay to feed in the long run)

Like her I personally wouldn't recommend feeding this food indefinitely as it would make sense to find out what, if anything, your little kitten is reacting to once she has recovered and put on some weight.

How many pouches are you currently feeding her and how much weight has she put on?

Thanks guys, thats put my mind at rest that I can continue feeding her the food she will eat until shes back to full health and try different things. I just didn't want her to be missing out on vital nutrients in the meantime.
I am feeding her whenever shes hungry which at the moment as she recovers is about 1.5 pouches per day.
She is putting on about 20g of weight per day, but is still very underweight at about 630g.
She finishes her antibiotics today but still has runny poo. She is so much better in herself and has tons of energy now, but this is still worrying me.
Shes back off to the vets tomorrow for another check up...

Poor little mite. So, she has had AB and the sensitivity food and she is still runny? I cannot remember, did you ever try the just bland cooked chicken diet? Has the vet suggested some probiotics?

Has the vet done a stool test to rule out parasitic or bacterial infection(s)?

Yes I did try bland chicken and that didn't work either. She got so bored of it after 3 days she stopped eating it!
The vet did give me some Pro Kalin before the antibiotics but that didn't do anything. Maybe I need to try that again now shes finished her AB do you think? Trouble is she absolutely hates it and it stresses her out so I'll only do that if I have to.
I will ask the vet about testing her stools as no that hasn't been done yet..

Yes, I guess it can become quite boring but did she firm up on it at all or was she still runny?

Might do absolutely no harm to continue with the prokolin for the time being by helping to rebalance the gut flora but since you are back at the vet tomorrow anyway I would see what they say. Do you have someone to hold her while you squirt some prokolin into her mouth? There is another product by protexin that is only a probiotic, which you can ask your vet about too. But when your cat has dire rear than the prokolin has the advantage of also containing a bulking agent, which the other product doesn't have.

I am not sure whether this is something dietary (unless your kitty is also sensitive to the stuff that is in RC sensitivity, which is a possibility - for example, one of my cats is allergic to rice and any poultry inc duck, so this food would be out of the question) so a stool test to rule out any other nasties is the way forward.

The antibiotics will have messed with the balance of the gut so a probiotic is always advisable after a course anyway even without obvious tummy troubles. Prokolin is only kaolin and some probiotic - to be honest precious little of each. As Hobbs says, there are better products and as she's eating well then the powder could easily be mixed with food.

Hi, thank you for your help. I will ask the vet about all of this and see what they say.
Do you what the product is called that could be used in tablet/ powder format in her food? That would be preferable if it could have the same effect as the pro kolin syringe really stresses her out.

I should have also said that it has definitely gotten a lot better - before the AB she was going about 5 times a day and was really poorly (very lethargic, not wanting to play and not very hungry) but now shes a different kitten - running around madly, eats lots and just generally looks a lot better.
She is now only going about twice a day and her stools are sometimes slightly more formed but still fairly runny.
It looks like the bug has cleared up, but will the stools sort themselves out with the probiotic without any more antibiuotics?
