What can I do to help?

My cat has fallen off my wardrobe and fell awkwardly on her leg, she seems to be okay, and is not permanently in pain. Is there anything I can do to help her more? She has clean litter and fresh food and water right next to her where she is asleep. She is hopping and her leg injured leg is floppy. Maybe broken... The good news is that she is going to the vets first thing tomorrow morning. (We couldn't take her today as it is bank holiday and not classed as an emergency. ) Is there anything I can do for her tonight to make her more comfortable or help her?
Thanks so so much in advance! xx

Re: What can I do to help?

How can a suspected broken leg not be an emergency, cats are amazing at hiding their pain and if it's broken she will be hurting.

If you suspect that it is broken I would phone the vet back and demand that they see her at least for pain relief.

Re: What can I do to help?

Im not sure I agree.Who said it is not classed as an emergency. If her leg is broken she will be in considerable pain and should be seen now.I wouldnt like to have to wait till tomorrow to have a possibly broken leg looked at.

Re: What can I do to help?

Yep I agree with the two posts above. She needs to be seen asap. I know it is a bank holiday and so will cost more for an emergency but a floppy leg is almost deffo a broken leg it could be such a bad break that the bones are rubbing against each other every time it is moved. The poor darling is going to be in pain. Plus they may have hurt themselves elsewhere on their bodies/head from the fall so should deffo be checked out!! You need to take food up aswel as they will probably have to sedate to xray!

Re: What can I do to help?

until she goes to the vet is there anyway that you can confine her like a dog crate to stop her putting too much weight on her leg. if it is broken or just bruised that is probably what the vet will advise.

Surely this needs to be seen and pain relief given if nothing else.Displaced fractures can cause blood flow to be restricted and nobody knows what damage has been done.It may not be broken but I certainly wouldnt want to be taking any chances.

Re: What can I do to help?

We have no crate, but she is asleep at the moment, she has easy access to food, water and litter tray. Am not sure what to do as mum is asleep now. x I think I may have over exaggerated in panic though, Mum said it's probably not a break. phew... But I will let you all know how she goes, thank you for replying!

Re: What can I do to help?

I will say again, take up the food and in the morning before her vet visit the water aswel as if the vets have to xray the leg they will more than likely have to sedate her. To do this on a full stomach can cause problems of the cat inhaling vomit. I very much doubt your vet will do a concious xray as they are difficult to get. If the leg is floppy and dangling from the body it is very likely to be broken, of the leg is being held up it is still possibly broken but could just be pulled/bruised. Non weight bareing in the tell tale sign of a broken leg. If you deffo cant take her tonight make sure she moves as little as possible tonight... her being asleep means she prob not wanting to move with the pain and so will restrict her own movements but make sure she is deffo seen by a vet tomorrow morning!

Is your mum a qualified veterinarian? Sorry but 'its probably not broken' from an unqualified person would not be good enough for me in this situation. Everything you speak of, floppy leg, not putting weight on it, points to a very damaged leg. No one can tell you that its not broken except a vet, and nothing you have said points to it 'probably NOT being broken'...

And if a broken leg isnt an emergency, I dont know what is... Was it your vet who told you this? I very much doubt a vet would say that and if they did I would be looking for another vet.

Ahh, thank you, it's very reassuring to know people are up to help late at night! I will do what you have said. she is generally a lazy cat anyway, I just hate the thought of her being in pain. I don't think she will move, but I am going to sleep with her so I can keep my eye on her. Thank you so so much, your help is appreciated greatly!!
