How do you control the smell?

The kittens are currently using an open litter tray and cheap Morrisons clumping litter as this is what they were on before. And tbh, the room they are in stinks! It's not overly bad but you can tell it's the litter. It's not really a pee smell or anything, just a sort of wet litter smell I suppose.

I'm on zooplus right now about to order some OKO Plus and going to town tomorrow so am going to get a hooded litter tray with the filters in. Will this stop the smell? I'm guessing it's the cheapy litter which doesn't absorb the smell which is causing it?

I've opened the window (they open about a cm or 2 and then lock so can't be moved). The house I got them from absolutely stunk of pee, the smell just hit you as soon as you went through the door. Now I'm paranoid my house is going to be like that too Is it just a case of changing the litter and tray or is there anything else I can do to help?

Re: How do you control the smell?

Mine aren't very keen on Oko and I still think it smells. At the moment I'm using a mix of ultra clumping cat litter and bog standard cheapo cat litter that isn't clumping and doing the clumps 2/3 times a day in tray 3 oko in the other 2. I would say when I get in it sometimes smells slightly but as soon as they are scooped it's fine.

How often are you scooping? if you remove all the wet clumps you shouldn't even get wet litter smell.

Re: How do you control the smell?

I use the cheaper kind of cat litter too. I've got Sainsburys clumping litter at the moment. I change it daily or at least every other day. I only have one kitten using it at the moment and it is a hooded tray with a flap and filters. I also put a layer of newspaper in the bottom because it makes it easier to change IMO. Mine is in our lounge/diner which is our main living space and I never notice a smell. It will probably smell more as she gets older.

Re: How do you control the smell?

I scoop whenever I see they've been in the tray if I'm at home. If I'm out then I scoop before I leave and as soon as I get home. It gets done at least 4 times a day.

Re: How do you control the smell?

The Morrisons Value litter was just plain awful. As you say it stinks to high heaven in itself before the cat starts to use it.

We tried quite a few supermarket brands and many from Pets at Home and actually ended up settling on Tesco Value. Unlike the Morrisons one it doesn't reek and it also doesn't clump (not a fan of clumping litter).

Despite the fact that it's value it's actually rather good litter, it doesn't track at all with ours no matter how much he tries to drag out of the litter tray, unlike the standard and premium supermarket and pet store brands, all of which ended up littering the house like confetti.

Re: How do you control the smell?

I'm a fan of Tesco Value litter too. I've only got Sainsburys at the moment because we happened to do the shopping there this weekend. I don't do scooping. I tend to put less litter in the tray and change it completely more often.

Re: How do you control the smell?

Re: How do you control the smell?

Catsan is good but as I change the litter completely every day I might as well use a value one if that makes sense.

Re: How do you control the smell?

I use th ebreeders select paper pellets. It dosnt smell of wee at all still cant control the other smell

Ive gotto feel sorry for me my 2 kitttens have their tray in the front room because the dog of 13 is having free roam of the house as normal untill they are a bit bigger. Its a good job I have a very laid back husband!! but its perfect for keeping the teenage sons out of there
