Early neuter/change of vets

Hey, the 2 little monsters are getting along great and seem very happy.

This may sound odd but bear with me.....

The vets I took them to on Friday won't neuter them until 5 and half months.. I wanted to get them done earlier having read about it on here and have now found a vets that will do it at 3 months of age. I feel that having one of each and getting them done soon is a better idea.

I've registered with the first vets as they were near to where I am moving to but am not 100% sure that I am keen on them - no real reason just a gut instinct which started after I'd booked them into an appointment, having explained about them being rescues and wanting wormer/flea treatment etc, the receptionist/nurse said "oh don't you want them to settle in for a couple of weeks first?" ... which to me seemed strange as I have always believed in getting this sort of thing sorted straight away - rescue or not. Perhaps I'm just a bit picky and sound like a right snob or something...?

Basically in my long winded manner I want to know if it is rude to change practices at this point??? I've never changed vets before, my animals with my parents have always been with the same vet (for nearly 20 years now because they've been so great) so I'm uncertain about doing it.... any advice on how best to move without causing offence????

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Early neuter/change of vets

You can change whenever you want and you don't have to notify your current vet, just register at your new one, has your current vet seen the new kittens yet ? if yes then then your new practise can just ask for any previous history to be emailed/faxed over and that's it, I like to stick to one practise mainly so I can get a continuum of care.

Re: Early neuter/change of vets

He's only seen them once, that was on friday just for a health check and to prescribe me flea/wormer as my boy who I weighed on weds was under a kg in weight so I wanted to make sure they were both healthy too as both rescues who were dumped with another vet.

I was looking for somewhere near to where I was moving and have previously only been to one vet in my life but they are too far away.

Just feel bad and like a time waster for changing and guess I wanted someone to say it was ok. I only want the best for Horace and Isis and thought a vet close to home would be best, short car journey and all that but maybe its worth going further.

Re: Early neuter/change of vets

mine dont do vaccinnes for a week - they say for 'settling in' but its because antibodies from mothers milk taking time to leave the kittens body, and also runny bums are fairly common in first few days at a new place

dont know why they dont just tell you that! its not difficult science!

Re: Early neuter/change of vets

I got my two from rescue and I had to take my boy for his 2nd vaccination to the vet the rescue used because they use a different vaccine to what my vets use, I didn't like them before from word of mouth and liked them even less after, yet they are my closest practise.

Go to the vets you are happy with and the treatment you get as your kitties health and your happiness is worth a slightly longer journey.

Re: Early neuter/change of vets

Well I've put mine down to the stronghold as they were both fine before it... I've not had kittens for years and knowing the theory is never ever the same as carrying out the practice

I'm happy to wait until they've settled in for vaccs, but worming was different, I can't see the point in waiting if the poor things have worms. Not exactly a great idea in my book. I would've just gone to get frontline etc from a pets at home as am familiar with the brands but because they were quite low in weight and not much was known I wanted them to be checked out.

Just feel like I should've done some more research before choosing, but then it's not like you can go visit first...

Re: Early neuter/change of vets

We had to change vets as we moved from London to Milton Keynes and we actually moved the the middle of Archie's vaccinations. I would never take my three to somewhere where I wasn't happy so if their current vet did not make me happy I would move them
