Cleo has her vaccs tomorrow....not looking forward to it!

and I am dreading it! She had her first set in rescue but had her second set tomorrow. It's not the vaccs - it is how she will react to being put in her box and the thought that she maybe being moved again!

I would say Cleo is 10 months old at most, she is tiny. What I know about her history is that she was found heavily pregnant by the RSPCA as a hungry stray, they put her in foster care so she could have her babies - she had 7.

Then she left foster care, went to a temp shelter till her kittens were old enough, then onto the RSCPA, then to us 2 weeks ago. I am terrified she will think she is being moved again. This morning she came to the bedroom when we woke up and came on our bed purring away, she seems to be so secure and happy now.

She is coming out of her shell more each day and adores Ella and Archie. She is shy with us but as I say we are getting moments of love now that melt our heart. She hates being picked up and is terrified of sudden movement (we have to ensure we never go to stroke her like we are about to slap her - so lordy knows what happened before she was a stray) She also is terrified of carrier bags so I think there may be a story there somewhere!???

Anyway we are getting the cat carrier out soon so she can sniff it (although Ella will happily sit in the carrier waiting to go probably for the next two days ! She is a nightmare! and loves going out in it!)

When Ella and Archie go to the vets they have security as they have been with us so long and trust us 100% but Cleo doesn't have that and I know the vet will terrify her! I am so worried

Will be glad when tomorrow is over!

here are some pics:

Now!

Re: Cleo has her vaccs tomorrow....

Poor girl
Leaving the carrier out is a good idea but sort of defeated if Ella thinks it's her bed If you have some Feliway you can spray the inside of the carrier with that - it should help. good luck with Cleo at the vets
Just to add - my first ever cat (40 years ago) was called Cleo Cleocatra the lovely tabby cat

Re: Cleo has her vaccs tomorrow....

Lymorelynn has beat me to it! I too was going to suggest you leave the carrier out so that she gets used to it.
I'm sure the fact that you will be with her and able to soothe her will make this trip much less scary for her. Good luck!

Re: Cleo has her vaccs tomorrow....

Aww, I know its hard but she'll learn from this and other trips to the vets that going in the carrier doesn't mean you're getting rid of her! Not that she'll necessarily love it. Has she got a blanket she likes or something she likes sleeping on? You could try putting that in the carrier. And putting it out with the door open for as long as poss beforehand. And put the cat in the carrier before you get ready to go out - otherwise they knooooow something is up! haha!
PS some treats for afterwards will help build positive associations too

Re: Cleo has her vaccs tomorrow....

NO she likes to sleep under the settee, so there is nothing really I could put in. What I really hope is the vets doesn't keep us waiting, they did for Archie's vacs but he didn't care. I really really want it to be over just because I don't want her to take a step back .

I would do anything for Archie and Ella, they are my world but I have to say having a cat with a history has taken my protectiveness and love for her to a different level. I just wnat to make amends for what she has been through. Where I know what Ella and Archie have been through cos they were so young when we got them!

Re: Cleo has her vaccs tomorrow....

The bix is out. Ella has sat in it. Archie has OWNED it! Cleo hasn't been near it as she hasn't had a chance. I am about to load her.

I hope she knows she aren't going to dump her and she will be coming back. It feels very different taking Cleo then it did Ella and Archie as they would never have thought they wouldn't be coming back but poor Cleo has had it so hard!

Re: Cleo has her vaccs tomorrow....

If it helps reassure you at all, we had to take Eva to the vet a week ago. We're in a similar situation to you in that we don't know much - in fact, nothing at all - about her life before. The vet thinks she's about 18 months, she's obviously had a home because she's taken to the indoor life well, but was living as a stray before we took her in.

She "flipped" - best way to describe it - when we put her in the box. She was so frightened that she weed, and we had to put a towel over her to restrain her.

After we came back, she went and hid down by the door to the garage for a couple of hours, then came up for something to eat, and went upstairs and slept for the rest of the day. By the next morning, she was almost back to normal, and 48 hours later was her usual cheeky self again.

Re: Cleo has her vaccs tomorrow....

Hi Lulubel,

Yes we had much the same Cleo went mad and hated it. Get her to the vets and they kept us waiting 20 mins and then said "We can't do the vaccination as we use a different brand, we can make another appointment for you to start the process again!"

I lost my temper, they knew we were in for the 2nd vacc and actually they never seme to care about the stress the cat is going through. So we shall start again but at a diffetent vets. I am FUMING!
