Re: purchasing a kitten from ads in a pet shop

I don't think there's anything wrong with getting a kitten this way, as long as you view the home they have come from and are happy with it. The £10 is a moot point - a lot of people who have opps litters ask for the money because free kittens are too tempting for irresponsible owners, who take the cute kitten but don't want the less cute cat. I doubt it is an attempt to make a profit of any sort.

My question is "what will happen to these kittens if a home isn't found?". I would hope the owner would take them to a shelter, but is that likely if the owner didn't bother to get the mother fixed?

My Caliban came from just such a home. We have had to pay out a fair amount of money on his teeth, most likely because his mother wasn't feed properly during pregnancy and feeding (according to our vet), but I am still glad we gave him a home when he needed one. I'm pretty sure he was going into the river with a brick otherwise.

Re: purchasing a kitten from ads in a pet shop

Before I knew any better I've bought £10 petshop moggies in the past. I've been lucky with all of them, but now that I'm older (and maybe wiser!) I would never do it again.

I know it's been said but there are so many beautiful rescue cats out there needing homes. Cats absolutely hate being stuck in rescue cattery situations - they get stressed out, aggressive, withdrawn, it's a terrible quality of life they have to lead through no fault of their own. Rescues often have kittens in too, if your heart is set on a youngster.

There are also rescues such as the Cinnamon Trust, that rehomes pets whose owners have died.
