litter box

Hi,

Me and my OH are getting our first ever kitten on 1st of October so we are both very excited ( I do think I might be slightly over excited but well.. cant help myself ). I have already bought cosy bed, bowls, toys, blankets etc.. Now the only thing is missing is the litter box and there are so many out there and I cant decide.. I try to take into consideration that our cat will get bigger as he gets older (we are getting british shorthair boy) and really dont know if I should be looking for something suitable for kitten or should I think about the future as well? I think that the entrance to the litter box shouldnt be too high as I want kitten not to struggle to get in.. I originally liked OMEGA PAW SELF CLEANING LITTER TRAY, it seemed quite easy to clean but because it hasnt got a flap door I think the smell might come out quite easy and as far as im aware this is not very pleasant smell
Should I be looking for litter boxes with filter, is so how often should the filter be replaced..
Can anyone give me an idea of what you think would be most suitable for our BSH? I also dont want to spend fortune on this litter box either.. I want best of both worlds

Thank you xx

Re: litter box

dont know about the fancy ones - mine has a 2 quid tray!
did start them on adult size so they didnt have to relearn with a new one

i use a crystal type litter, bob martins, and when poo is covered it stops the smell

i'd be excited too!

Re: litter box

i would advise against the self cleaning trays at all costs! i`ve heard too many horror stories regarding them to even consider using and they can cause problems for you in the long run. i`ve heard of them going off whilst the cats are still in the box absolutely terrifying them or even the noise they make afterwards scaring them to the point where the cats refuse to use the litter tray - including any new one you buy for fear it may do the same. for all the time it takes to quickly scoop the trap out i`d say forget the self cleaning!

i have one of these Covered Litter Boxes: great selection at zooplus: Cat Toilet Cabrio and one of these Great Deals on Litter Boxes & Cat Supplies at zooplus: Cat House Toilet - Jumbo one of my boys is really big, probably equivalent to a bsh and he fits fine in both trays. i just change the filters in them once a month and they seem to do fine. i use the clumping litter and have one of these Litter Locker II at zooplus by my litter trays an i just tend to scoop out any mess around 4 times a day, it only takes seconds and the litter locker keeps the smells in too

as for which litter to use, obviously i prefer clumping as i find it easier to clean but to begin with i`d recommend using the same litter as the breeder so not to confuse them. to start with i`d get one of the cheap shallow trays (can be picked up at the pound shops) but if you do go for the hooded ones you`ll most likely need to remove the door on it to begin with as a lot of kittens are put off by it then you can add it back on once the cat is used to the tray

Re: litter box

What sort of tray does the breeder use? I always use at least three different types for my kittens so that are used to whatever new slaves might choose - though I have to say I have no experience of the self-cleaning ones.
A good diet will help with unpleasant smells whatever type of tray you use and also if you remove poos as soon as possible.
Very cute BSH kitties by the way

Re: litter box

I have a enclosed litter tray from Argos :- Buy Cat Loo with Scoop and Filters at Argos.co.uk - Your Online Shop for Cat accessories.

I have had it for 5 years now for my cat and its brilliant!! I am going to be investing in a second one soon for my kitten as the open litter tray I have for him is getting too small and I dont like the smells of the open tray!! I find this litter tray well priced, easy to go and pick up (if you have an argos near you) or have delivered and a great size for kittens and adult cats alike! With the door on there is minimal mess even if you remove to door for the kitten to ge used to it, it is still a great litter tray esp. as it has the carbon filter in the top.

ETA gorgeous kitten btw he is going to grow into a stunning big blue boy!!!

Re: litter box

I had a covered one from Pets at Home originally for my Somali but ive since changed top these Gimpet Cat Toilet: great deals on cat litter trays and boxes at zooplus as I've just got 2 Ragdoll kittens and wanted something big enough for a ragdoll and the original one was even getting a bit small for my Somali.

I left the top off for a few days while the kittens were getting to know where the tray was but the top went on yesterday as they were making far too much mess without it on. I have fo say there is no difference in smell with or without the hood on and no different from the old tray which had a filter. A good diet, good litter and regular scooping are the only things that manage the smell in my experience.

Re: litter box

I use this one. it has been great for Cleo as at first i just used the bottom so there was no hood> my concern was she might think it was a cat carrier - once she used it, i placed the lid on with the door up. then placed the door down when she was used to it

Great deals on cat litter trays and accessories at zooplus: CatIt Cat Litter Tray

Re: litter box

Hey, we started off with a cheap Morrisons kitten tray....three days later I bought a pink flowery enclosed litter tray from P@H ((due to Maisie kicking litter 3 meters around the room)) from the first day we got it it's been fab, used with a good litter like oko plus no smell & no mess

You haven't got long to wait, has your little boy got a name yet?

Re: litter box

When my boys were using a tray we had a jumbo sized silver one with a lip lid from P@H. Later on we also added a large hooded tray to the lounge room as Bloo was having a few 'accidents'. I really like the larger ones as our boys are a little clutsy and needed the extra space.

They did use a small standard tray once when boarding and apparently they dug all the litter out of it and played in it until the breeder got them a jumbo tray - then straight back to using it normally

Re: litter box

I am one of those very sad people that really enjoy cleaning the litter tray. I have an enclosed one bought from P@H and use Oko Cats Best litter, which tracks slightly but is clumping and really easy to clean. Also, it doesn't smell bad.
A self cleaning one would take away all my fun!

Also I got a Litter Locker after advice from this forum, and it is brilliant! No more going out to chuck bags of poo in the bin when its raining. The cartridges last for ages too.

Your new kitten is gorgeous. Any names for him yet?

PS. When I saw the self cleaning one advertised I did wonder if it had a sensor not to go off if it was being used by a cat. Judging from a previous post, obviously not! You would think they would have thought of that as it seems quite groovy otherwise!
