Is my cat lonely

We have a very loving, very affectionate 2 year old male neutered cat.

We have recently discovered that he goes into our neighbours house a lot. We're not happy about this but we don't want to fall out with our neighbour. We are told our cat is smitten with their female cat. Would getting a female companion for our cat help?

Re: Is my cat lonely

It could just be that your cat likes hanging around with this particular cat. It isn't to say that if you get a companion he would get along with them as well or that he would stop going over to see his friend.

I know it must be annoying but as long as he comes back to you at the end of each day for his food and cuddles, and you know he is safe during the day, I would let him get on with it.

Is your neighbour feeding him? If so, you could always have a friendly word that you would prefer it if they didn't.

My neighbours are lovely and very affectionate towards my cats too, and I quite like them knowing our boys so well, as they are the ones who would look after the Furbies if we went away on holiday. I would rather them being looked after by familiar loving folk than strangers.

Think of the positives - at least you know your cat could be looked after by this neighbour if you ever went on holiday etc

Re: Is my cat lonely

Before Oscars accident I knew he went in a couple if my neighbours houses but I've since discovered he went in nearly every house in our small neighbourhood! They all loved him going in and all have cone to the garden or my door since his accident saying how they miss him and to see how he is doing!

Unhappy Re: Is my cat lonely

Thanks for quick replies. I guess our problem is that we don't really know the neighbours and the lady seemed to hint that she'd like to keep Samson. I don't mind him going there of his own accord- it's him being encouraged to go in- so if the only reason he is going in their house is because of a little lady- we'd yet him a little lady- but as you say- there is no guarrantee that he would stop going in the neighbours house x

Re: Is my cat lonely

One of my previous cats was like that. He got lots of love at home & had company with two other cats but he still loved to go off visiting the neighbours.

I did have to have a word with a couple of people as he did start to get quite tubby at one point but he was such a friendly boy & loved all the attention.

Oh, it is not right that she should keep Samson if she knows he is yours, but maybe she just said it as a passing remark.

Cats like to be totally indulged, so as long as you know where he is, I wouldn't bother too much. Does he come when you call him home?

It seems that Samson likes other cats which is always a good thing. Another cat might be nice, but as I said no guarantees that he wouldn't continue to visit.

Is this not a good reason/excuse to get to know your neighbour better? My neighbours have been fantastic over the past year when we have needed them/they needed us. If Samson can instigate a new human friendship that might be a good thing?

The neighbours ar a few doors away but yes it could be a good way to get to know them! My neighbours either side of me are the ones who look after Samson if we go away.

Maybe I just liked the thought of another cat! Lol xx

Oh in that case....

Yes!!!!!, I think that getting another cat will be a really good idea and stop Samson from wandering to meet his lady friend.

Ignore all my other posts above

Re: Is my cat lonely

Years ago we had a beautiful strapping white dsh called Percy, back then the cats had free access via a catflap at all times. One day my elderly neighbour opposite called me, she was talking to Percy on her garden wall, and she said 'Is Snowflake yours?' Hahaha I couldn't believe it - apparently he'd been going to her house EVERY DAY whilst I was at work and I'd never noticed because he was always around with us in the mornings, evenings and overnight. She said she never fed him, just gave him a drop of milk and a fuss, and anyway that was the icebreaker and we became firm friends. He carried on visiting her every day but only when I wasn't in. Five years later she made her way slowly and painfully to my back door in floods of tears to tell me that she'd found Percy dead in her passageway. I never cried about it because I simply could not go there or see his dead body, so my OH and in-laws took over the burial.

A few months later we adopted Claude, a big fluffy black lad, well my Top Cat HATED him and would not accept him for some reason, although they both seemed docile creatures (cats eh?) and sure enough, my lovely neighbour soon told me that Claude was her frequent visitor. Despite every encouragement it was soon obvious that Claude had his paws firmly under the table over the road and there was harmony in both houses that way, so we said to our friend, look, do you want to keep him, he obviously doesn't want to live with us, he wants to live with you. She burst into tears of happiness and toddled off home, and they had several happy years together (even though he used to wee on her hall carpet!!).

Oh I've gone on a bit, not really sure what my point is....just reminiscing I suppose!
