Cat whilst at uni dilemma

Someone was going to look after my cat but I've realised he's unrealiable - gets too stoned to even bother getting a cup of dry food for my cat!

So now I'm nearing going in uni accommodation (and I REALLY have to get away from my neighbours or I'm gonna be stressed out to heck trying to do a PGDE course - according to a member of staff at Edge Hill (not where I'm going), it's harder than a masters) and I don't know what to do with my Chico.

I've seen photos of catteries and I think he'd hate being in what amounts to a large cage all day with hardly any room to roam even if it has a run. Any suggestions? Landlords of student accommodation don't generally allow pets

I'll be studying in Bolton

Re: Cat whilst at uni dilemma

Hi! I had my cats with me all throughout my 4 years at uni. The first 6 months, I was in student accommodation and they were in quarantine, us all having moved back from Portugal (before pet-passport days). When they came out, I moved out of Halls and into rented student accommodation. I was lucky that the landlord was fine with the cats as long as the other 3 members of the household were. Again I was lucky and we all got on brilliantly, with me happily leaving the cats with them if I had to go away. In my final year I rented privately with my chap and we were fine there, too. You may be lucky, too, so don't write off the prospect of being able to have your cat with you. It might take some ringing round, but it can be possible.

Good luck!!

Trouble is I'd already paid a deposit for accommodation. So moving into uni halls. So unsure what to do - for now I'm gonna sorta move into halls and have my cat at my current flat and visit him (he's used to me staying out overnight anyway) whilst I try to sort something out.

Re: Cat whilst at uni dilemma

Is someone going to be at the current flat with the cat whilst you are in halls? When renting privately, some nice landlords can be persuaded to allow pets - it helps if you offer to give an additional 'pet' deposit or agree in the contract that you will pay for any cat damage at the end of the lease. However, this is not an option in uni halls and seen as you have paid your money you can't really change your plan...do you not have any friends or relatives that would be able to look after him whilst you're in halls? Then you could take him back when you move into private accom. If that's not possible perhaps you should consider finding a new forever home for kitty? I know it would be hard, i've been in a similar situation myself before, but you have to think of your cat and his best interests. He deserves a settled home.

I've discovered there's nothing in any information I've been given so far that says I can't take pets. So he's coming with me. And friends are either miles away, or living in halls themselves, or both. As for my relatives, the only person who I thought would give him a decent temporary home couldn't even be bothered to give him a cup of dry food.

And I told him I would never get rid of him - and I meant it and I'm not breaking my word to him. If he goes to live with anyone else, it's temporary only.

I've always said to my cats, "I will never leave you", so right with you there! It's so hard and I was really, really fortunate when I went to uni. For starters, as I said, I was in halls, but wasn't actually supposed to move out before my year was up "under any circumstances". When the time came for the cats to come out of quarantine, I went grovelling to the burly, rugby-playing, no-nonsense tutor in charge of accommodation. I decided to be up front about why I wanted to leave halls early and he just melted before my eyes! He was a total cat-lover and couldn't have done more to help me. He was so understanding. Don't know if it helped that I was a mature student...

In my 3rd year, I had to do my year abroad (languages), and it was a nightmare trying to find someone to look after the cats. In the end, a friend of a friend stepped up. This guy was a Spanish professor and absolutely nutty about cats. I think they had a great time with him. I saw them when I came home between placements and then when I came home for good, that's when I moved into private rented accommodation.

Soooo.... Here's hoping you have a similar scenario and it all works out. It's so hard when you study but don't fit into the normal mould of young, carefree and no responsibilities. Of course, in the real world, some of us have beloved pets that we absolutely can't part with, just as some folks have kids...

Very best of luck
