Is this normal? - Your thoughts

Hi,

I've never dealt with rescue animals before. In fact, this is our first rescue cat.

Basically, they want us to take her back directly to them for spaying. Yeah, I think I understand why, but I'm happier spaying her at my local vets who I've used for 20 years and I'm more than happy to provide them with appointment dates/times and faxes confirming she has been spayed (if that is what their gripe is).

Also, it's difficult for me to get back to the place as I don't drive and need to take time off work/work from home which my boss is being a bit cagey about right now (up to the point where he has told me if I say cancel at the last minute you MUST cancel ... What a great idea!!........) whereas with the local vets I can easily pick her up after work and make up the 30 minutes / 1 hour the next day that will be lost dropping her off and travel time to work. Also, they want to microchip her, but in the name of the actual rescue centre. Not sure if this is normal practice? Surely if she gets lost it means she goes back there rather than to us and we'd never see her again?

Just wanted to know what your thoughts are on this. I spoke with the vet surgery that the actual centre deals with today (had to get the ball rolling because of the boss - despite it being another month away yet!) and they were fine with our plan but they need to relay our wishes back to them.. Oh yeah, also spoke with our own vet surgery, which has dealings with this centre (including spaying!) and said they can't see why they are so insistent and would actually provide them with details of things??

sounds a bit cagey to me. we got our puppy from many tears and he has be chiped already. when we got the paperwork through they put our details on with home and mob contact but also put there number on as a 3rd backup. as for nutering we have to get the vet to sign a form when hes done and send it back to them. very perculior

Would I be right in saying the resue home would do the spaying free of charge where as you vet will charge?
I would prefer to pay extra for my vet to do it. Just for peach of mind.
How old is she now?

sounds weird, if you`re not comfortable going back to them for the spay then i wouldn`t. i`d write to them/email and state every details of the spay you plan and the vets you`re using also stating you`ll provide proof once they procedure has been completed. that should be enough for them, i know in the centre i volunteer for they give the option of having cats neutered by them or your own vet (which they provide a voucher for) which rescue is it?

wyntersmum have mt ever got back in touch with you? i never heard from them once after i adopted syd (other than for collections etc but that has nothing to do with him), not so much as the follow up call or nothing to see how he was. the conditions of me adopting him were that jake was neutered 2 days later and i gave them proof but as the phone was always engaged and they never bothered contacting me i never sent this proof - even when i`ve got in touch recently to inform them of my new address they didn`t ask about it and barely even asked how syd was

This is correct.

I am the same in the sense of peace of mind .

She will be 5 1/2 months on 1st October which is the date around then they want her in.

So we were thinking end of September.

EDIT:

If something "happened" during the procedure (God forbid) I would be able to "accept" it from vets we've been going to for 20 years rather than some unknown place.

Re: Is this normal? - Your thoughts

i know my local rescue centre keeps chip details in their name, you would be informed if cat was lost and picked up, but they dont allow details to be changed. I think the reason being so cat cant be rehomed and details changed. (the person whos chip details are in has to give permission)

As for spaying all rescues i know do that before rehoming too, so again I find it strange it wasnt already done (unless its a kitten that was too young in which you would have known prior)

Surely you knew before now that these were the conditions?

Not being funny, just you say its inconvenient so wondered if they have changed the goal posts as it were. Had you arranged for the chip details to be in your name and vets to do spay then theyve said no? If so and If contract already signed (which it must have been to pick cat up) there isnt anything they can do.

Re: Is this normal? - Your thoughts

She was a kitten, so yeah she was too young at the time.

Yeah, it's on the contract that we signed for. I wasn't there when she was signed for and I it was enquired about doing the spaying ourselves.. To be honest, I think we were all so enamoured with her that we weren't too concerned about it, which is our fault really. It definitely wasn't inconvenient at the time. I don't really think it is now. I just dislike the threat hanging over my head at work over my boss saying "oh you'll have to reorganise" and to be fair I just worry excessively about where she is going/getting done (I think she gets transported a further 10 miles after I drop her off...)

The deal with the microchip is what they said. If she does get picked up and taken back there and we do get informed.. I'm not too bothered about that.

Re: Is this normal? - Your thoughts

When I adopted Tabitha in April. The rescue center wanted me to take her back to them for neutering.

My concerns for this were that:

1, She might think I'm taking her back to the sanctuary for good
2, Like yourself I wanted my regular vet to do the neutering so that if there were any problems there would be a continuity of care and a familiarity with her.

I explained this to the sanctuary and they said that I would have to pay for this myself (not a problem) and that they would need to tell my vet to disclose to them that she had been neutered when they called the surgery to check. This was also no problem and they were happy for me to do it this way so this is what we did.

Thankfully there were no problems and I hope all goes well for you too.

Bearing this in mind under data protection companies and such are supposed to only keep records for 6 years then must destroy them in some circumstances. So I'd mention this and request your own details be put on the chip because if the worst happens and they no longer have your details how will they contact you? Are they willing to be a point of contact for you for the next 10-20 years????

Re: Is this normal? - Your thoughts

ahh right. sorry I thought you meant they had gone back on an agreement or that she should have been done before adoption.

Personally if its a journey for her to get to the vets they use I cant see why they wouldnt prefer her to be done at your vets if you are paying. Its obviously going to be less traumatic. if they wanted the chip details done in their name they should have done it before you picked her up. For all they know you may have never took her back! I can understand why they want the detsails in their name.

Id just contact them again and explain it all, hope all goes well..
