Re: The mandatory Chip N Snip Petition from us at Animal Lifeline UK

Mandatory "chip N snip" of all domestic animals
Responsible department: Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

We at Animal Lifeline UK agree: Animal breeding is out of control. Therefore, we believe: 1 - All animals MUST be microchipped & neutered unless specified that they will be used for breeding. 2 - All breeders of ALL animals MUST be registered with an independant person & spot-checks of the premises done regularly to ensure good condition & there are no more than 5 more un-neutered females. 3 - It is breeders responsibility to have a microchip fitted BEFORE the animal is rehomed, Microchip must have details of breeder & new owner. 4 - All animals not intended for breeding MUST be netuered by 6 months unless medically unable. 5 - All breeding animals must be registered as so by 3 months of age. 6 - If an animal is handed to a new owner the chip must be updated by the owner releasing the animal. 7 - Any animal arriving in rescue MUST be chipped & neutered before leaving. The registered owner will be asked for a donation towards the animals care.

I am not agreeing to that!!! Just proves you lot know NOWT about breeding dogs!!! How the feck do I know which puppies I MAY use for breeding at 3 months of age??????? Please tell me how I can 'KNOW FOR SURE' which pup will turn out to be a good example of its breed AND pass Health testing, which isnt done until a later age, 12 months at the earliest for hip and elbow scoring.

I dont want anyone dictating to me to have MY dogs neutered at the age of 6 months, thank you very much!! I prefer towait until my dogs have reached full maturity before messing with the natural levels of hormones!!

And also, you wanna be stating that the Registered BREEDER is resposible for any dog of their breeding that ends up in Rescue - they should be made to take them back - like responsible breeders do already!!!

Sorry if all that sounds harsh but thats really got my back up!!!

Re: The mandatory Chip N Snip Petition from us at Animal Lifeline UK

I`m sorry - chipping I go along with.
But enforced neutering without any regard to health, development or behavioural issues? I don`t think so.
I had a bitch who exhibited aggression due to hormone problems after spaying. I have seen a Pointer who looked more like a giraffe because his growth plates didn`t close due to early neutering. There are risks of incontinence in bitches and the health advantages for males are not outweighed by the disadvantages.
I am against hobby or backyard breeding, puppy farms etc. - but having dogs treated like cattle is not the answer.
I know the risks - and believe me I have my dogs interests at heart but this is a step too far.

Re: The mandatory Chip N Snip Petition from us at Animal Lifeline UK

I won't be signing it either I'm afraid.

It might, and I say might be ... at a push acceptable policy for cat breeders, but I wouldn't think any dog breeder would even think about it. Cats and dogs are totally different.

It's too cut throat and I don't think it would have even a little bit of a chance of being pushed through.

However, I do think it would be brilliant if, as a forum we could discuss putting a petition up from the rabbit folk, dog folk and cat folk ... for something tailored to the animal.

Mandatory micro chipping is a great start, and also one that could fit all domestic animals. But rule on neutering and what not need to be more specific to the animal and their development.

or cats, I won't be signing it either. I can list plenty of good reasons why a "healthy" cat wouldn't be neutered at 6 months. And the bit about all cats coming into rescues must be neutered before they leave, what 10 week old kittens too?

Agreed, it's all quite slly and ill-thought out e-petitions like this one will be the death of this whole e-petition scheme.

that's a given, but it would have been a good idea, and in cats/dogs best interests, to have researched this and gotten a lot of valuable and valid opinions BEFORE starting up a petition that is bound to fail because it is so ill-advised.

Re: The mandatory Chip N Snip Petition from us at Animal Lifeline UK

Its a bit cut throat and too blanket policy for me too im afraid. The chipping absolutely defiantely 100% all for, for every animal! But just saying all domestic animals with regards to breeding and neutering is where is starts needing specifics depending on the animal. Licensing definately but it really does need researching a little more and have sub catagorys for each kind of animal as they are completely different and should be treated as such x

Re: The mandatory Chip N Snip Petition from us at Animal Lifeline UK

Have to agree with the others on this,so rather than just *not signing it* I feel I have to say that I will not be signing it .If I was still breeding my Afghans,a very slow maturing breed ,I would have no idea at such an early age whether a pup was suitable for breeding or not.I'm not sure how cat breeders will feel as I dont breed cats but I'm fairly certain that they also will be against it.
