Quick question...

Evening

If i take Amber to the vets, will they charge to cut her nails? I would be too scared to do it myself in case i hurt her...but if the vets charge lots for it i guess i could give it a go :/ She has had them cut at the vets before but that was part of her first appt...i am being ripped to shreds!!

Re: Quick question...

Vets are a business so yes. Why do they need cutting. I wouldn't do it

Re: Quick question...

use nail clippers and do it yourself?

They won't charge if they are going in anyway for something else

Re: Quick question...

They will more than likely charge. Why not take her along, get them to show you and ask if you can do one foot whilst they are watching, then next time you can do them yourself.
I do my cats so that they can paddypaw me to their hearts content without pain for me!

Re: Quick question...

yes they do. My vets charge about £14. My elderly cats quite often need theirs done as they get older and thicker and they don't shed them, so the nail curls around into the pad

Re: Quick question...

If she will sit for you, you can do it yourself. I use ordinary nail clippers and just take off a tiny bit of the tip to ensure I don't go too far up the nail by accident. Take off just enough to blunt the nail.

If you are too unsure to try it yourself, expect the vet to charge you their normal consultation charge.

Re: Quick question...

I have had this done by the vet nurse rather than the vet.....I just went the once so he could show me how to do it properly. Call the clinic and ask if this is an option.

Re: Quick question...

I would think so unless you are going in for something else.If you ask specifically for just a nail clip then you will probably get an appointment with a nurse so it should be less than a vet consult,at least it is at my vets.Use it as a lesson in nail clipping, ask to be shown how to do it yourself,as it is something you will need to do from time to time especially if your cat/cats are indoor cats.

Re: Quick question...

Nats120, if you choose your moment when the cat is relaxed you should be able to do this yourself with ordinary nail clippers but please only take off the tip. Press down on the cats paw with your thumb on top and forefinger on the pad. You will see this causes the claws to be extended and gently snip off the sharp pointy bit using your other hand. The cat will not feel a thing I promise!

Re: Quick question...

Vets will think of any reason whatsoever to take money from you. I think it's pretty easy to do it yourself though xxx
