Re: Quick question...

Give it a go yourself... it's fairly easy.. I do Alfies and we do a foot and he gets a treat.. then we do another foot and he gets another treat so on and so on..... been doing that since he was small and he's got used to it and will tolerate it... just make sure you don't cut down to far like the others have said.

Re: Quick question...

just jumping on this thread hope you dont mind
please what is the best age to start doing this from? and will they go sharp again? im undecided as to wether our cats will be indoors or out but until at least next summer they will definatly be in.
also my other question is (and please dont laugh if its a daft one! ) will they still be able to climb the cat tree that they love zooming up and down so much! i know we are only talking about taking off the tip (so's to avoid the quick) but wondered if that effected their abilities to climb?
thanks

The nails will sharpen up again in a couple of weeks. She does have more trouble to climb the post than when her nails are sharp but she gets used to it very quickly. I started doing Ari's when I had confidence enough to do it. I bought a proper clipper from Zooplus which was horrible. It just bent and squeezed the nails so I had to use my nail clipper that is very sharp and I've been using it since then. You can ask your vet to show you how to do it.
Some tips:
• start examining your cats paws. Spread their fingers and feel their nails. See if they can tolerate that.
• check a time when they're relaxed, when light is good (so you can see well the quick) and you can position yourself comfortably (I do it during Ari's afternoon nap on a chair by the window)
• start little. Just cut the smallest bit of the tip of the nails. When you and your cats have more practice you can do it properly. Do just a couple of nails for start. In the beginning I used to do it everyday, two nails at a time.

Hope it helps.

Re: Quick question...

Thanks for your help guys! I was pretty sure they would charge but just wanted to double check!

I wanted to cut them just a bit as they are very sharp and don't seem to 'go in' when she is relaxed and sleeping either, so i think they are quite long. When she had her first appt at the vets they offered to do it as they said they looked quite long..but silly me i didn't really watch closely!

She is sat on my lap at the moment so i tested her out by holding a paw and pressing down like you said but she snatched it away hehe!

I'll keep trying though, thank you!!
xx

You do your job for free do you? Vets are a business, they need to make money for people using their time
