Re: Advice about kitten and genral chat.

She may not have worms, but based on the circumstances you've posted so far (e.g. the rather questionable level of responsibility of the people you got her from and the fact that she was infested with fleas) places her at a higher likelihood of having worms. One pipette from my vets (which treats fleas and worms) was £8.95 - not that much.

I'm sorry if you feel that I wasn't being very friendly but I was as tactful as I could have been. Kittens do cost a lot of money - especially veterinary treatment, as you're now finding out. Vaccinations, flea/worm treatments and spaying all cost money and they are all things that you should have considered before getting her.

Congratulations on your new kitten, you clearly adore her and I'm sure you'll do your best for her. Unfortunately the same cannot be said of the people up the road where you got her from. Firstly, they have allowed their cat to have kittens (why?). Secondly, they are more interested in getting rid of the kittens for their own convenience than in the kittens' best welfare. Thirdly, the kitten has fleas, so the mother cat and other kittens will probably have fleas as well, and goodness knows what else.

Through no fault of your own, you are now having to pick up the pieces from this irresponsible breeder. Do take her to the vets as soon as you can for a health check. I don't want to worry you unduly, but this kitten hasn't had the best start in life and they can go down quickly if they get an infection, etc. Let us know how you get on.

Re: Advice about kitten and genral chat.

It certainly does cost a lot of money to care for a cat properly. You need to feed them a lot as a kitten (2 pouches doesn't seem much, and tesco own isn't the best if foods)

Vaccinations and flea and wormtreatmemts ate important and need to be started now.

You will also need up to £50 to spay her soon.

Re: Advice about kitten and genral chat.

Forgot to say kittens should be wormed from a young age..you say you can't find anything that's suitable for her age but if you go to a vets they will give you the stuff for it (which you should do anyway as medication from pet shops etc may be cheaper but are not as good quality).

Re: Advice about kitten and genral chat.

And no having a pet is 100% NOT a right! How ridiculous!

A pet is a responsibility, not a right! If you can't afford one you shouldn't have one.

A pet is no more a right than a Ferrari, and a Ferrari won't suffer if I can't put petrol in it from one month to the next. A cat will suffer if you can't treat it for the basics.

Take the poor thing to the vet.

Re: Advice about kitten and genral chat.

Hi Yaazmahn, welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new kitty.

Yes, she was taken away from mum too soon but what's done is done. I'm sure that she has become very special to you because your mum is going through a difficult time right now with her health and it must help you to have something to distract yourself with.

It sounds as though Allie has got worms and this is not uncommon for kittens. Everyone is recommending she be seen asap because kittens are very fragile creatures, even though they charge around the house like demented beings, and can become dangerously ill VERY quickly. If Allie has worms then she will not be getting the full nutrients from her food and this would make her poorly. As long as you keep her indoors -she is MUCH too young & little to go outside - then you can put off getting the vaccinations for short time. But worming is important and the stuff on the supermarket shelves is REALLY not good at all. The best stuff will come from a vet and this is why Allie needs to see one as soon as possible. I'm sure she is already quite precious to you and we would hate for her to become poorly and for you to be sad when you need things to make you happy right now.

However, by joining this forum and asking questions, you are showing that you want to take care of your pet the best you can and that you are willing to learn how to do that. In my books, a willingness to learn makes you a little bit special too.

I hope you stick around - there is so much to be learnt about cats. I've had them for over 30 years and I still find out something new almost every day.

Re: Advice about kitten and genral chat.

Firstly, welcome to the forum

Secondly, sorry to hear about your Mum - I hope that all goes well. x

Like others have said your kitten is very young and trying to learn what is acceptable behaviour and what is not. Normally this would be done by her Mum (Mummy cats are very good at giving a quick gentle swipe when they know kitties are going too far!) You are now her Mummy, and have to teach her what is right and wrong. (not with swiping obviously! )

In regards to the scratching, even though it may not hurt now, you need to get her to stop doing this as there is nothing worse than a adult cat that thinks scratching is OK. As she will be indoors for at least a few more months it is worth getting the vet to show you how to trim her claws. Your vet should be happy to teach you to do this. This will help her and you, as she will not get her claws caught up on things like blankets etc and you can stop getting scratches. One of the first things I got for my kittens before they even came into the home was a scratching post. You can get cheap ones off ebay for less than £10 including postage. Kittens/Cats really need to act out their natural instincts and scratching and stretching is one of them. It is great that your Dad wants to make one, but try and explain that your kitten needs one now.

You should also provide toys for your kitten to explore and use her mind. This can be some cardboard boxes with holes cut in - it really does not need to be fancy or expensive. Play with her by getting her to chase a piece of string. This will be a good way for you to bond with her and great exercise for her. I also give my kittens plastic milk carton tops, as they catch them and bat them around. Once again, this is a 'free' toy.

Kittens do lose their baby teeth, so you are quite right in thinking this. It is anytime from 4-7 months. A lot of time you don't see this, as they simply swallow the teeth. Your kitten does not know biting is bad or unacceptable. To stop this, ensure you never use your fingers or feet as toys for your kitten. If she tries to bite, stop what you are doing with her, put her down with a firm "No!". Do not shout or show agression or she will get scared. With my kittens I give them bendy straws to chew, and when they went through a finger chewing stage, I always had a straw ready for them to nibble on. They LOVE chewing these even now and flick them with their paws so they can chase them. Cheap and very easy to replace.

As you are going to the Vets they should give some prescribed worming tablets that you have to give every month until your kitten is 6 months old, then it can be reduced to every 3 months (if your kitten is going outside after being spayed).

Unfortunately, flea treatment, worming and vaccinations are expensive. However, it is better to get preventative treatment rather than wait until the kitten gets something worse, as that could prove more expensive.

I hope that gives some advice, but we are all here to help with any issues you have as we all want the best for cats/kittens, and that includes your little one

Well I'm sorry but all I did was give my opinion...nothing even to do with anything she had said about how I wouldn't have animals if I can't afford them and she has a go expecting me to feel sorry for her because her mum is not well? My mum wasn't well but I never used that as an excuse to not look after my animals properly!

I don't see why she should be allowed to get personal and say stuff like that when she knows absolutely nothing about anyone else's personal life!
