When is the best stage, 8 weeks? 12weeks? help!!
Honestly, Im amazed that the vet even said this, all I can say is I agree with catsmum, there is no reason to take a mum away from babies and neuter, when the bubs are so young, around the 11weeks marks, a week before they leave would be OK, I wait for mine to leave then do it after, my girls going in next week Unless its a serious reason, she is feeding them and they are gaining, so unless you havent told us something (which I doubt) then the vets (which know little to nothing) about breeding, is crazy lol!

Id take her back to another vet, it is actually quite normal for a loss or a small gain somewhere when feeding kittens, and for it to go back to normal after, of course if it was everyday then thats different, Im literally just getting out of exactly what you are going through, have also hand fed many foster kittens, and its so draining, if mum has milk then its a major thing to keep them with mum, if you take her next week and neuter, she will have a collar, a big old sore wound and with 5 kits, do you think she will lay down or want them jumping on her? im guessing maybe after 10-14days, by then she may not even know what/who they are

So ID carry on doing what we said before I raelly have to sleep now I have to be up in 5 hours! Keep us updated

Re: Back from the vets.

I never had any intention of spaying until the vet told me too as she said Pix had no more milk as she was unable to get it out so I thought they we're spaying her for the right reason (even though the results won't be back til Thursday)

Of course delaying spaying is best if it can be safely avoided; which is why I and others didn’t understand why you advised getting the mother cat spayed now (in your posts # 10 and 17)

I agree, many vets have never even dealt with the aftermath of neutering a mother with 3 week old kittens, many don't even know how mum cats act after spays. They often just think that mothers are nothing but milk producing machines, they too often forget that socialisation of kittens and teaching kittens is very important too.

Re: Back from the vets.

Thanks guys, last night was awful since my nephew who is staying with me for 2 weeks has come down with tonsilitis and between that and looking after the kitten's, i've not slept in 48hours. Pixie still isn't eating so I'm contacting the vets again when they open at 8:30 as its been 3 days now where she has barely touched anything.

Re: Back from the vets.

Oh gosh, you must be going on adrenalin alone! How did you get on with the vet on the phone earlier? How are the kittens doing? Maybe you could get a cat sitter in for a day, give you a chance to sleep?

Re: Back from the vets.

I have no idea what i've been running on, I managed to get 2 hours just so hopefully that should cover me for tonight, she's back at the vets at 4:45pm tonight, it was the only one I could get her, Kitten's taking the cimicat well and are all now asleep. Hopefully tonight will be easier.

Re: Back from the vets.

Firstly - big hugs as I think you need them!

Secondly - I'd agree with TB (she knows alot does that lady ) She does have milk otherwise your kitties would have continually lost weight, however it sounds more like the milk has slowed down which is probably due to her being poorly.

If shes not eating then its going to have a major impact on how much milk she is producing just like it would with a human breastfeeding. I'd be at the vets asking for some anti biotics that are safe for nursing queens as it sounds like a possible infection or virus, she's definatley poorly and I honestly believe if you can get mum well her milk will return also.

Best of luck hun x
