Some people really do know nothing!

I know when I first came on this forum I didn't know much about cats/kittens etc but thanks to the many lovely people in here I have learned so much!!

I'm sick of people willing to give away kittens at such a young age (I know I asked about getting a 6/7 week old kitten but as I say I didn't know much about kittens so presumed that the people selling them knew more than me). I put on facebook that I was looking for kittens and someone messaged me saying she knew someone who was giving them away for free. She got me her number and I gave her a text asking for some info about them, to be told they are ready to go now at 5 weeks!! I told her that was far too young and I wouldn't be taking any then emailed the other girl telling her she was getting rid of them at 5 weeks - to get a reply saying it was probably because she is pregnant and will be wanting rid of them get your bl00dy cat neutered then!!!!

I then saw a post from someone on a local for sale page on facebook saying she was looking for a kitten. Someone replied saying a local rescue had just rescued loads of animals and there were some kittens, to which she replied saying "I was looking for one younger than that, about a few weeks old" so I replied saying they shouldn't leave their mum til at least 8 weeks at the very youngest, a man replied saying "6 weeks actually" and she replied this very mardy reply about how she only asked but didn't mean she was going to do it then blocked me! Why say you're looking for a kitten that's a few weeks old if you're then gonna say it doesn't mean you'll take it away from its mum so young?? Thankfully a woman replied backing me up saying "yes, 8-12 weeks" to which the man replied saying "but more commonly 6 " yeah more commonly by people who don't know anything about kittens or what they are doing with them!!!

It gets me so angry and I only learned about it myself from here! Wish people would get their cats neutered!!! And at least research how to look after kittens properly and how old they should be when they leave mum!!

Rant over

ExAckerly!! Drives me mad - been noticing on Facebook someone who's cat got run over, replaced by two kittens a fortnight later who crap on the bed and wee on the floor. I'm willing to bet they're not 12 weeks......

Re: Some people really do know nothing!

Feel free to rant hun - I hope you feel better for it now.

Unfortunately, trying to educate the dirty unwashed about how to look after their cats properly is like trying to fill a bucket full of holes with water - near on impossible.

There are just TOO many 'cant-be-bothered, it's-only-a-cat, I'd-rather-spend-my-money-on-beer-and-fags' people on this planet and those who really do care are a HUGE minority.

Thankfully, the internet and this forum - along with others - can now get the correct information out there to those who genuinely do want to do the best they can for their pets.

I completely agree. If people are going to make the decision to allow their cat to be pregnant, they should at least have the cat/kitten's best interests at heart and KNOW THEIR FACTS! x

Re: Some people really do know nothing!

8 weeks is the minimum although I have successful had a 6 week old kitten who's mom died when it was young and it turned out great.

Used litter well and was eating fine.

This is very true, obviously in exceptional circumstances it can be okay but it's the fact that people think as soon as they are eating and using the litter tray they are fine to leave their mum.

I think it's more to do with behaviour than anything else as lots of kittens can eat and use the litter tray at a young age.
