I need help with a stray cat.

I'm stuck in a bit of a pickle. This is quite a long story so I will apologize in advance.

Around 2 years ago, we found a very young female kitty in our front garden, hidden behind a wheelie bin, squeaking her head off. Obviously, as cat lovers, we took her in as we tried to find out who the kitty belonged to. Turns out, a young couple from a couple of doors down had just gotten the kitty (named Molly) and thought it would be a good idea to let Molly, around 10 weeks of age, out of the FRONT door. Reluctantly, we gave her back, and gave the couple a good bollocking for letting her out of the front at such a young age.

Over the next year and a half or so, we saw numerous things that made us mad. Molly had an obvious pregnancy bump a few times, so they obviously had not had her spayed. We had seen her limping once or twice on one of her front legs. She was constantly ripping open our binbags and eating leftover food, and she seemed to be out roaming in local gardens in all weathers, wind, rain, etc.... By this time we had called round to their house about 2 or 3 times to confront them about what we had seen, but among their excuses was "We try to get her inside, but she never wants to." To be fair, we had tried feeding her cat food and coaxing her inside the house when the weather was bad but she was VERY shy and hated coming in the house, even for food.

Anyway, in April this year, she was in our garden when she gave birth to two black kittens. It was the middle of the night, so we only found out when we heard the sqeaking in the morning. The problem was, we have a large area of wooden decking, which she had given birth RIGHT at the back of. There was no way we could get to them. We cared for Molly and she would go and feed them. We got in touch with the RSPCA and Cat's Protection, reported the owners and tried to see about all the cats being re-homed, however, 4 months, and lots of phone calls later, we still didn't hear back about re-homing the kittens or Molly herself. Her kittens were now growing up in our garden and we tried our very best to introduce them to our cats and our house. It seemed to be working, for a while. They soon got big enough to jump over walls though, and would wander off for days on end. We told the owners about the birth, but they obviously didn't care. We have now adopted one of the black kittens and named her Fluffy. It took a lot of work to tame her but it's paid off - she's adorable. The problem is, Molly and her other kitten are pretty much feral now. We haven't seen them in around 2 weeks, and when we do see them, they don't hang around for long. We feed them when they pay us a visit, but they hiss and refuse to come indoors.

Here is the worst thing : Molly is definitely pregnant again. I desperately want her to be spayed, as she is producing litters and litters of kittens who are all going to turn out stray and feral. The problem is, how do I keep track of her pregnancy? We see her and her poor little kitty very little. She is so frightened of humans and refuses to come into the house. What will happen to the next litter of kitties? Should we get in touch with the RSPCA or Cat's Protection AGAIN? Every time we ring they say "No room in our shelters, we will contact you when there is", so I pretty much know what their answer will be. We desperately need help to help little Molly and her other black kitty, and the next kitties on the way. She is getting pretty big now...

If you have any advice PLEASE help us! It would be much appreciated!

Re: I need help with a stray cat.

omg im so sorry you have to deal with this. I understand how distressing it is.

The rspca should have been round asap! Is there any way you could contact them again and ask if you rehomed them would they be ok woth that? eg. Go round to the owners and get them to sign the cats over. Im sure between everyone on here that some homes could be found even if it was temp as a foster.

Thats all i can think of atm, as if you just take the cats (even though i know i would) you could be prosecuted.

Im tempted to say take them and get them homed as their owners obv dont care, and if asked say you havent seen them.. but like i say thats breaking the law..

Thankyou for your advice. We would absolutely love to take the cats on, but with four cats of our own, my mother is absolutely adamant that we cannot take on any more. We will continue to try our best finding homes for them and taming them as much as possible. I will contact the charities once again and see what they say. The RSPCA have been at least a bit helpful and sent us lots of cat food so we can continue with feeding her and her two kitties. xxxx

Re: I need help with a stray cat.

Would the RSPCA or Cats Protection lend you a trap? When the previous owners of the stabled mum keeps her horse at sold up the new owners didn't want the cats. Mum phoned the Cats Protection and they lent us a trap. If you take them in as a foster, would they pay for the vets bills?

Re: I need help with a stray cat.

Id be tempted to borrow a trap from the Cats Protection or RSPCA and try and temporarily house the mum til she has her kittens then spay and release her and rehome the kittens..
(well, coz you thought the previous owners had moved away didnt you??)

Re: I need help with a stray cat.

I agree, the only solution here is a cat trap.
