Re: Can Cats detect when they are doing the wrong thing? xx

rumble definately knows when he's doing something i've deemed wrong, but instead of not doing those things he's just a lot sneakier about it

Dinah and Monty definitely know what is naughty and what is not, but it doesn't stop them from doing the naughty things. It just means they do them with caution... with one eye on the task in hand and one on us! They both have brilliant "guilty" faces. They know they're not allowed on the dining room table and they NEVER get up there when we're watching. Quite often though we will catch them on there and they will do the guilty face then jump down again.

Re: Can Cats detect when they are doing the wrong thing? xx

My two older boys tend to get up to less mischief these days although Merson will still sometimes go up on the forbidden kitchen worktops. When told to get down he will walk the ENTIRE length of the worktop before doing so. The look I gets says "Yeah, I'm getting down, just in my own way and my own time!!!"

Abby, however, is only a year old and so still gets into a ton of mischief. She has finally gotten the hint that behind the tv is a no-no but not going on the worktops is taking much longer to sink in! I'm now waiting to see just how many thumps it will take from Oscar before she stops trying to catch his tail!!!

We like newbies. Except the ones who sign up specifically to cause trouble. Obviously you're not one of them! Welcome to PF.

Re: Can Cats detect when they are doing the wrong thing? xx

Milly certainly knows stealing Sam's food is wrong, but it doesn't stop her doing it. She just gobbles down as much as she can as fast as possible, then flings herself down from the table and runs when she hears us coming! She also doesn't come for food at the next meal time because she knows she won't be getting anything.

(We're not punishing her, by the way. She has digestive problems and is supposed to have a special diet, so we try to give her body every chance to digest the food she shouldn't have had before we give her any more. Unfortunately, she doesn't usually start being sick until a few hours later, so it's too long for her to associate stealing food with feeling ill.)
